Valentina Goldman's Immaculate Confusion Book Blast: Giveaway for $100 Amazon Gift Card or PayPal Cash!

Title: Valentina Goldman's Immaculate Confusion
Author: Marisol Murano
Publisher: Hipso Media
Released: August 1, 2012

Since her arrival in the United States from Venezuela, Valentina Goldman isn’t exactly living the American Dream. She’s living the American Nightmare.

Her late husband, Max, has left her a young widow, a step-daughter whom Valentina didn’t want, and a bi-polar ex-wife. And oh, having given up her dream job in New York, Valentina is also unemployed in Arizona.

Part Bridget Jones Diary, part Modern Family, Valentina Goldman’s Immaculate Confusion is the story of a woman trying to get a handle on her wacky life in America. In breathless, blog-like snippets, Valentina compares her own story with that of her eccentric sister, Azucena, who has bizarre troubles of her own down in the tropics.

Valentina Goldman’s Immaculate Confusion is a funny and moving story about what happens when a passionate South American woman moves to the USA and, like so many of us, ends up with a life she never imagined.

"A funny and quirky mix of anecdotes and life lessons. This is imbued with such a distinct personality -- one that begs you to laugh at nearly every page."
~ Emily from Goodreads

About Author Marisol Murano
When she was 18 years old, Marisol Murano moved to the United States to attend school so that she could return to her native Venezuela afterward to get married and have kids. None of this happened. Instead, she ended up getting a master’s degree, which eventually landed her a boring job in an exciting city: New York.

After a few years running the corporate rat race, Marisol woke up to this one day, "Even if you win the race, you're still a rat." That was the end of her banking career and the birth of her first novel: The Lady, The Chef, and The Courtesan.

Marisol was the first to be surprised when her first novel was named Latino Book of the Year, Original Voices from Border’s and was picked as a BookSense selection. She was further surprised when it was translated into several languages.

A second career detour led her to become a chef and the author of a cookbook, Deliciously Doable Small Plates from Around the World. Between novels, Chef Marisol now travels the world conducting culinary demonstrations on exotic cuisine. In fact, Valentina Goldman's Immaculate Confusion was born at sea in a split-second of confusion when during a culinary demonstration a woman raised her hand to ask: “Did you always know you wanted to be a chef?”

Life is stranger than fiction, indeed.

Excerpt from "Your Mark on the World," by Devin D. Thorpe

Saturday, June 5, 1976, was a beautiful, sunny day in Eastern Idaho. People were going about their mostly agricultural business as usual. Little did they know that a silent, unannounced disaster awaited them.

Four years earlier, the U.S. Government had begun construction on a large, earthen dam on the Teton River. The Teton Dam was one of several built during that time period using similar construction materials and design.

In the spring of 1976, the dam was complete and the reservoir behind it was filling for the first time. As the spring runoff brought the water down the river, the water level in the reservoir was rising four feet per day. The water level was nearly to capacity.

Only the relatively small emergency outlet works were in service at the time. The main outlet works and the spillway were not yet in service.

Officials observed water seeping through the dam on Thursday morning, two days earlier. Such seepage, however, was not considered unusual for an earthen dam and no extra precautions were taken.

At 7:30 Saturday morning, the seepage had become running, muddy water, suggesting there was a leak eroding the dam. Still not worried, no action was taken. By 9:30 in the morning, the dam featured a visible wet spot and water was spewing out and beginning to erode the face of the dam.

Crews with bulldozers were sent in to repair the leak at this point. Media began to arrive to follow the story. By 11:15 in the morning, officials announced the need to evacuate downstream communities. The bulldozers were sucked into the widening gap in the dam and their operators had to be rescued by coworkers using ropes as they scrambled on foot to escape the disaster.

At 11:55 AM, the dam collapsed, sending its contents down the canyon toward the communities of Wilford, Sugar City, Hibbard and Rexburg, the latter being by far the largest.

Teton Dam, June 5, 1976, by Eunice Olson.

The Sanctuary of an Unrealized Faith: Excerpt from "A Diary’s House"

NOTE: After reading this exciting excerpt, be sure to CLICK HERE to enter to win a Kindle Fire and autographed copies of A Diary’s House: Where True Love Endures, by C. David Murphy!

I ran into what appeared to be an alleyway; a long stretch which was open and clean from brush and debris. It was unclear at first where I was heading, but as I continued I knew of this place. The shadow lights from the moon came clearly now; the wretched view of something once unseen, clearly provoked an ominous sight.

I was now in the Land of the Great Oaks.

My father had warned me to never enter during the night hours; it would be unsafe, and a most perilous journey. But I could not go back; for what awaited me there was certain and procured death.

They were searching for me; in haunt of me.

But this place had a hollow soul; a spirit picked out from the body of this scene, and left nothing more then drenching fear.

I walked alone; the trees stretching even higher than before; crossing one another in a maze of limbs and branches.

Still, the moon watched me.

I walked forward; my eyes pulled out from their sockets; my senses alert; the silence beckoned for any sound; anything.

But nothing appeared; only the lifeless stream of shadows, empty trees, dust, chill, and a harsh winter night.

I began to run; the silence remained. But fear has an instinct of its own, and I knew something within awaited me; watching me with its evil intent and shallow eyes.

“Heavenly Father,” I prayed; taking all into view, “protect me…”

The silence was disturbed.

Something was coming; coming for me.

Footsteps, then slide; drag and thump; drag, footsteps; thump; slide.

I remembered this.

It came again: drag, footsteps; thump, drag; slide and footsteps.

It was Jingles Doehn.

There was a pause; a lift, then I could hear the sounds of a horse ride to my rear; to my sides; to my front; it was everywhere. That hollow echo into this night rattled my fears into total terror.

I began to run; anywhere; somewhere where safety lived.

Not in this place; not in this night. This was to be my grave.

The soft trots to this steed hastened now into a slight gallop.

I spun about; my breath was hard and cold like the air.

“Landon Hampshire!” I heard his hideous voice only to confirm his presence was not my imagination, but very real, “I will find you!”

“The Lord is my shepherd…” I began to pray and run all in the same motion, “I shall not want…”

“Hampshire!” he voice curdled like sour milk, “I know you are here!”

“He makes me to lie down in green pastures…” I moved into the bed of a thick-thatch and heavy clump of red oak trees.

“Come out!” The gallop was stronger now; and closer.

“He leads me beside the still waters…” I closed my eyes and I felt through the heavy branches of those trees; my breath was harsh, cold and burning my throat and lungs.

“You can’t escape!” Doehn returned; his hatred more pronounced.

“He restores my soul…” I bent behind one massive trunk.

“There is nothing to save you now!” This gallop stalled, as if he and the horse were looking about for me.

“He leads me in the paths of righteousness,” I leaned my head to the back of this tree; looking skyward and directly into the moon, “For His name’s sake…”

“Come to me young Landon Hampshire!” He was turning down the alleyway I had just escaped from.

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death…” the full Psalm was now becoming most clear into my memory now.

“Let’s be quick about this!” His voice, trot and smell all came ever closer; I could hear him prepare his pistol for fire.

“I will fear no evil…”

Exclusive Interview with Sean C. Sousa, Author of "The Forever Saga: Flash"!

What is this book about?

At heart, The Forever Saga: Flash is a father-son redemption story. The novel follows Brian Renney -- a haunted, former war hero -- and his son, Jason, a star athlete who resents his father’s withdrawn, prickly nature as much as he seeks to understand it. When a shadow from Brian’s past returns to threaten him, the Renney family becomes drawn into a conflict against powers they do not understand. But through it, Brian can become again the hero he once was, both to the world and to his son. And in spite of overwhelming odds, they gain an ally that could turn the tide in the war to come.

How did you get the idea for this book?

The Forever Saga came to me in 2005 while I was dabbling in classes for video game design. One of my assignments was to develop the backstory for a video game, and I started with the idea of pairing an aging war veteran with a highly advanced robot -- the ultimate living weapon. What could they learn from each other? And what, or who, would they go up against? New plot points kept popping up until the idea outgrew a video game, or a movie screenplay. At that point, I reluctantly embraced the idea of becoming an author -- and I’m glad I did!

Is this your first book? If not, what else have you written?

The Forever Saga: Flash is my debut novel. I have written journal entries, poems, and short stories, but writing Flash became so fascinating and exhilarating to me that most of my writing efforts in the past six years have gone into it.

When did you start writing? Do you have any advice for beginning writers?

The decision to become an author in early 2006 was difficult, because it meant marrying my knack for writing with disciplined effort -- not my strong suit at the time! After spending most of ʼ06 researching for Flash, I made the commitment on New Year’s Eve that year to begin. On the first week of 2007, I started writing 3 single-spaced pages, 5 days a week, until the rough draft was completed in May of that year. Then the editing process began -- a lengthy one that took even more discipline and patience than writing the first draft did. And yet, it was those multiple rounds of edits over several years that prepared me to be an author, and transformed Flash into a book worth reading.

For anyone who feels called to be a writer, own it and be determined about it (and perhaps a bit stubborn)! Ignore the voices -- outside and in -- that criticize the creative ways you express yourself. Don’t be afraid to take the leap and start writing, but have a writing regimen set out before you start -- 3 pages a day is a great length, but do those 3 pages rain or shine; writing 6 pages on Monday doesn’t allow you to take Tuesday off.

Finally, be aware that you can be your own worst enemy: you’ll want the words to come out perfectly as you write them. Don’t worry about that; just get your thoughts written out. Where the rubber really meets the road is in the editing process. It will push you to hone your skill. I’d encourage writers to see their craft as a potter’s wheel; writing the first draft is putting the clay on the wheel itself, but the real quality comes from shaping what you have into something useful and beautiful.

Why did you decide to write a book in this genre?

I’ve always envisioned The Forever Saga as a distinctly human story wrapped in sci-fi elements like robots and advanced civilizations. Growing up in the ʼ80s, I loved the original Transformers cartoon and toys, both based on Japanese toy brands. I prefer the Japanese concept of robot as protector, compared to the dominant western idea of robots turning against their creators. Transformers is one of the only western depictions of heroic robots -- it’s why Optimus Prime is such an iconic fictional character. Similarly, my aim is to portray heroic robot characters in The Forever Saga that defend humanity, rather than oppress it.

Do you plan a sequel or future books?

There will definitely be multiple sequels, but I haven’t decided on the final number of novels for the series. Originally, The Forever Saga was intended as a trilogy, but just like Flash outgrew a video game or film, the overall story became too big for three books. One thing’s for sure, though: there are far more stories to tell about the Renney family!

What goals do you have for your books?

I definitely believe that we all should dream bigger -- professionally, my goal is for The Forever Saga to become a bestselling fiction series, and the next great multimedia entertainment franchise. With that success comes a greater purpose: to use my stories to raise awareness of, and support for, social justice causes that we face today. Each novel in The Forever Saga touches upon one such issue; Flash deals with human trafficking -- where individuals are forced into many forms of slavery worldwide. To that end, a portion of every sale of The Forever Saga: Flash will benefit International Justice Mission, a trusted organization that rescues trafficked victims and helps apprehend their captors. To that end, you could say that Flash is a novel of sci-fi and social justice.

Do you have a website? How can we order this book?

Readers can go to the official website, www.theforeversaga.com, to purchase The Forever Saga: Flash in e-book ($0.99) and paperback ($12.99) through Amazon and other retailers. The official website also includes news about the series, my personal blog, videos for fans, social media links, trivia, a contact page to reach me, and much more. I always appreciate interacting with fans, and the official website is the perfect way to do it!

Gallagher's Hope Book Blast: Giveaway for a $25 Amazon Gift Card, an Autographed Book, and eBooks!

Gallagher’s Hope

She sought a new beginning.
He sought what he didn’t know was missing.
Together they would discover hope in unlikely places.

Isabelle Rousseu must escape New Orleans and the memory of her family’s tragic loss. With her younger brother in tow, she accepts a position as the new schoolteacher in Briarwood, Montana. Desperate to keep what’s left of her family together, Isabelle joins her life with a stranger, only to discover that trust and hope go hand in hand.

Gabriel Gallagher lived each day as it came believing he had everything he could possibly want ... until a determined woman and her brother arrive with a little luggage and a lot of secrets.

It will take a drastic choice to protect her and give them both hope for the future.

Excerpt One:
Nothing existed of the life she had known.

Her slender arm wrapped around the little boy’s shoulder and pulled him closer to his side. She could feel his slight trembling and wished more than anything that she could take away his sadness. They were alone in the world. They had each other, and she prayed that would be enough for them both.

They stood and listened as the priest gave the final blessing, and two men lowered the caskets into the ground. The few other mourners who had been kind enough to attend the funeral asked her to leave with them, but she needed the closure. She needed her eyes to see what her heart refused to accept.

"An unfortunate affair," everyone called the incident for it wasn’t every day that a man murdered his wife and then shot himself. Isabelle wished not to think on the possible reasons why, but she couldn’t seem to help herself. She never imagined her family to be anything but happy. Their father’s death, however, revealed the truth. No one spoke of it with them, of course, but the lawyer had made the situation quite clear.

They were penniless.

Excerpt Two:

"You promised, Gabriel, you promised!"

Gabriel wasn’t a light sleeper. In fact it often took a great deal to wake him from a pleasant slumber and last night had been one heck of a night’s sleep. He enjoyed waking with Isabelle in the room. What he didn’t enjoy was being yelled at and falsely accused before he’d even had his first cup of coffee. Her words, though, did enough to bring him about.

"Criminy, Isabelle, it’s too early for yelling and I didn’t break my promise." Gabriel moved around the side of the bed until he located his boots and slipped them on. His happy memories of holding her in his arms the night before were quickly replaced by anger and irritation.

"What do you call waking up next to me then, Gabriel?"

"If you’ll take a good look at yourself, and me for that matter, you’ll see we’re both fully dressed. More’s the pity."

Your Mark on the World Book Tour: Giveaway for a $50 Amazon Gift Card and Autographed Books! (US/CAN)

Your Mark On The World

Your Mark On The World combines inspiring stories of ordinary people doing remarkable things to make the world a better place with practical advice to empower anyone to give more to a cause (charity, non-profit or social venture) without giving up a career or family.

The inspiring stories include:
  • Botevy’s life-and-death struggle through Pol Pot’s killing fields that led her ultimately to create an orphanage in Phnom Penh.
  • Rick’s personal crusade to cure cystic fibrosis to ensure that his two afflicted grandchildren will attend his funeral and not the other way around.
  • The eight-member Smith family’s world service tour.
  • David’s decision to walk away from a successful career as an international executive to volunteer to care for victims of leprosy in rural India.
These stories are combined with practical financial advice to empower you to give more to a cause without giving up your family or your career.

The book answers these questions:

How do I get out of debt and stay out of debt?
Which charity or cause do I choose to make my donation?
How do I decide where to volunteer?
How can our family plan a volunteer vacation?
How can I save money for retirement?
How much should I contribute to my 401k?
Can I use Mint to manage my budget?
How to retire early enough to devote healthy years to volunteering?

This must-read book provides an overview of philanthropy in America and around the world, providing you with a clear picture of charity and its fruits. You’ll learn the ability to leave your mark on the world.

Children’s Book Review and Giveaway: Ralph Tells a Story, by Abby Hanlon

Over on my other blog, Susan Heim on Parenting, I just posted a review and giveaway for the delightful new children’s book, Ralph Tells a Story, by Abby Hanlon! This is a wonderful book for writers to share with their children because it addresses two common insecurities about writing: 1) feeling as if you have nothing interesting to share and 2) having trouble transferring the thoughts in your head to the paper. This is a fantastic read for both children and adult writers!

Book Review: Lifted by Angels, by Joel J. Miller

I’ve read quite a few books about angels, but Lifted by Angels: The Presence and Power of Our Heavenly Guides and Guardians, by Joel J. Miller, is the first I’ve read that really delves deeply into ancient beliefs and teachings about angels. Angels are not the baby-faced, cartoonish characters often depicted in popular media. They are living, “ministering spirits,” as the apostle Paul refers to them, who are constantly present in the world in which we live. Miller examines not only the Bible, but the words of ancient religious scholars, such as Augustine, John Damascene, and Gregory Nazianzen.

We learn from these teachers that angels perform many roles. They are “celestial stewards” who provide angelic protection. They are central figures in the story of Jesus and the formation of the early church. As guardian angels, they attend to us on earth. They assist us in worship and prayer, and accompany us from our world to the next when we die. Through this book, it is Miller’s hope, I believe, that people will come to know angels in the same way that the ancient believers did.

Regardless of your religious affiliation, you’ll find Lifted by Angels to be a fascinating study of our “celestial siblings.” As Miller notes, “Most wander through life unaware of their spiritual surroundings and their angelic neighbors.” Lifted by Angels may just crack open the door between this world and the next as we learn more about God’s messengers and guides, and welcome them into our presence.

Exclusive Excerpt from "Passion Creek" by Avery Flynn

Sam couldn't let her walk out now even if Rebecca's Bounty had been laid out in his hotel room. The draw was immediate and undeniable, but that didn't mean it was logical or close to typical behavior for him.

His type ran quiet; academic women with hair pulled tight and shirts buttoned to the throat. Women whose most passionate outbursts came during faculty meetings at Cather College about publishing requirements for tenure. Neither he nor his dates stuck out in the crowd like this platinum Amazon.

The mixed scent of amber and orange wafted around her, teasing his senses. Without thinking about why, he scooted his bar stool closer to hers when she sat back down.

"Josie Winarsky." Her gray eyes stared into him. His face must have reflected his inner confusion because her Ferrari red lips curled into a smile. "My name, it's Josie."

"Like the song?"

She shook her head, sending the fat curls that fell to her chin waving. "Oh, I hate that song."

"Too late now, it's stuck in my head. Josie's on a vacation far away ..." Who was this person singing in a bar? Even his own mother wouldn't recognize him.

Not that he didn't want to flirt, because Josie was gorgeous. She must be almost six feet tall with legs that went on and on like an epic poem. She'd changed out of her cocktail outfit, but he couldn't stop picturing the intricate, tattooed curving vines and flowers that twisted into the shape of an infinity sign spanning from one bare shoulder to the next. He'd been so busy watching those vines while he played poker, he'd folded on a royal flush. Only a moron did that, which, apparently, included him tonight.
