Exclusive Excerpt from "Glistening Haven"!

Following is an exclusive excerpt from the new book, Glistening Haven, by Jill Cooper!

Didn’t Susan know it. “Kids!” She bellowed once more and this time was greeted with the rushing of feet. She inspected her children as they entered the kitchen. Both appeared well-groomed. Marie had long brown hair tied back with a pink scarf that matched her long hemmed poodle skirt and shoes. Jake was a good-looking seventeen-year-old with rosy cheeks. Since he became captain of New Haven’s football team, he was rarely seen without his football jersey. “Well,” Susan said proudly, “don’t you two clean up nice?”

“You’d rarely suspect them as ours.” Jeff agreed with a sip of Susan’s coffee.

“Stop teasing us,” Marie said with a roll of her eyes. “We know Jake doesn’t clean up well at all.”

Susan tried not to giggle while Jake’s cheeks flushed and his nose turned up like a pig’s. “You’re going to let her talk to me like that?”

“It was a joke.” Marie folded her arms in front of her. “Tell him, Mom.”

“It was a joke,” Susan brushed off Jake’s shoulders. “And you look handsome as ever.” Her smile glowed and inside a well of pride sprung a leak.

Jake’s expression softened. “Thanks, Mom.”

“Now off to school.” Susan headed to the counter as Marie picked up her lunch, but Jake stepped forward. He fiddled with his jacket and his face turned down while he chewed on his lip. “Mom.” There was a tremor to his voice. “We’re out of eggs and milk. I was wondering when you were going to get new rations.”

Jeff cast him a stern look. “If there aren’t eggs and milk, eat something else. You think it’s easy running a house with four mouths to feed?”

Marie’s nose turned up. “You always eat more than your share. It’s not fair to the rest of us, you know.”

“Stop it, kids. No fighting.” Susan sighed. “I’m heading to the market today to pick up a few more rations, but it’ll have to hold us until the end of the week. We’ve almost used up all of our monthly spending points.”

“We could eat out,” Jake suggested.

“That takes money and you know there isn’t enough to go around. You like this house heated and with cable TV? You like those stylish clothes on your back?” Jeff stood and shoved his bar stool into the kitchen island.

The teenagers eyed it and the air in the room thickened. “He doesn’t mean it, Daddy. Do you?” Marie turned toward her brother, her ponytail lashing at the back of her neck.

“No.” Jake said quietly. His cheeks reddened. “I’m happy to eat whatever Mom can cook up.”

Susan patted his cheek. “Good boy. Better get off to school. The bus will be outside any moment.” She kissed each of their cheeks and handed Jake his lunch. “No trading at the lunch table again, understand?” The front door latched and Susan pivoted, placing her hands on her hips.

“What?” Jeff asked, placing her drained coffee mug in the dishwasher. “He’s insensitive and selfish.”

“In other words,” Susan said, grinning, “a teenager.”

“Well, I don’t have to like it.” Jeff huffed. His shoulders relaxed when Susan kissed his cheek.

“He’ll be our boy again once he’s through this phase. He’s a good kid, you know that.”

“I know, I know. I guess I just remember being him, before I moved here. What a dope I was to both my parents.” Jeff shook his head.

Susan rarely heard him talk about his time before New Haven, and she tried to pretend such times never existed. Her fingers twisted together and spun her wedding ring while her shoulders inched up her ears. “Speaking of your parents, we’re going to meet them this Sunday for some bingo after church service. I’m making an upside down pineapple cake.”

“Not more bingo.” He sighed. “Can’t we just serve the cake here?”

“I love bingo and you love me, so therefore…” Something on the counter caught Susan’s attention; it was Marie’s metal thermos. Eyes wide, Susan snatched it and charged out the front door. She sprinted down the street and over the residential hill. At the corner stood a group of students. The girls were dressed in proper skirts and high heels, while the boys wore pressed shirts and khaki pants. “Marie!” Susan called as the bus squealed to a stop beside them.

Marie glanced up with surprise, clutching her lunchbox in one hand and her school books in another.

“Sweetheart, you forgot your liquefied organ juice!”

Marie grinned and kissed Susan’s cheek. “Thanks, Mom! I don’t know what I’d do without you!”

***

Susan clasped her hands in front of her. “Well, I know how stressful a move to a new city can be on you and especially the children. You’ll have to make sure they’re okay with the process, won’t you?”

Diane nodded, tears glistening in her eyes.

“New job? Is that why you moved here?”

Startled, Diane blinked her eyes. “Moved here? Moved here? Don’t you know? Don’t you know what this place is?”

Susan’s smile stretched like an elastic band and her heartbeat quickened. “Of course I do. It’s a great community. We have friends, families, jobs. Every weekend there’s a sock hop downtown. Our children can grow, thrive. So now you go on and tell me, why did you move here?”

Diane swallowed, glancing down. “So my children could grow up safe.”

Susan squeezed the woman’s wrist. She wore the same bracelet that Susan wore, that they all wore. “Why don’t you invite me inside and I can start to show you the ropes, okay? I’ll explain a few things to you. Trust me, there’s a lot of misinformation out there.”

“I could put on some water for tea.” Diane said and pattered inside, leaving Susan to step in and close the door behind her.

Susan adjusted her skirt and heard the sound of playing coming from the living room. Peeking her head around the corner, she saw a sofa and furnishings already in place, with cardboard boxes stacked against the wall. The two boys playing on the beige rug were four and five, or thereabouts. Cute children, Susan thought. Each had thick blond hair, with bracelets on their wrists. Around their necks, Susan saw red marks.

She gulped down a quick breath of air. How horrid the process was, just horrid.

Susan clicked down the hall and found the kitchen. Diane sat at the table beside a window that overlooked a small cramped yard. If it was big enough for a barbecue grill, Susan would have been surprised. Diane and her husband were quiet, holding each other’s hands while their eyes were somewhere else. Susan knew what it was like. She knew exactly what they were going through.

She sat beside them and outreached her hand on top of theirs. “It’ll be all right.” Susan said softly. “You’ll get through this fine. In a few weeks, you’ll begin to feel better, fit in.”

The husband glanced at Susan for the first time. His deep brown eyes held sadness she could feel. “We were living in Ohio. The kids just started school. We weren’t hurting anyone.”

Susan knew. She understood. “This is the way things are. It can be a good life if you accept it.”

“And if you don’t?” He asked quietly, angrily.

“You’ll go away,” Susan said. “And those children, those beautiful children will grow up without a father. If they grow up at all.”

He squeezed his eyes shut.

“Will the tea be ready soon?” Susan asked.

Diane nodded. “It should be in a minute.”

“Good,” Susan patted her knee with a big smile, “we’ll sit over muffins and you can tell me about the new jobs you’ve gotten. And I’ll tell you all about my big Tupperware party next week. Wouldn’t it be nice to get out and meet some of your neighbors?”

Merry Christmas and God Bless Us, Every One!

"...and it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One!"

An Interview with Margaret Feinberg, Author of the New Life-Changing Book, "Wonderstruck"!

On Christmas Day, Worthy Publishing is releasing a new book by acclaimed author Margaret Feinberg called Wonderstruck: Awaken to the Nearness of God. Have you ever felt your relationship with God isn’t as vibrant as you want it to be? Have you ever felt like God seemed far away -- even in the midst of devotions, prayer, and church? It’s far too easy to go through day-to-day life without a sense of the mystery, the marvel, or the awe of God’s presence. Wonderstruck is your personal invitation to toss back the covers, climb out of bed, and drink in the fullness of life! To learn more, watch the Wonderstruck video below, and then enjoy the Q&A with the author:

A Sneak Peek At Wonderstruck from Margaret Feinberg on Vimeo.

Where did the inspiration for the Wonderstruck book and Bible study come from?
Have you ever had one of those seasons where everything goes wrong, and when you think it can’t get worse, it somehow finds a way? Most people who have worked in ministry have experienced those seasons -- some may be in one right now. My husband, Leif, and I had just gone through one of the roughest years of our lives. In the aftermath, as we processed the pain and loss, I had an unexplainable desire in my heart. I began praying for the wonder of God. In essence, I said, “God reveal yourself, your whole self to me. I want to know you as Wonderful. I want to know you as I’ve never known you before and see you in places I’ve never recognized you before.” God did not disappoint.

What do you mean by “the wonder of God”?
Sometimes talking or writing about wonder feels like tying kite strings to clouds. It’s ethereal, and you can never quite get a grip on it. But if you look in the dictionary, the two main definitions of wonder are: “being filled with admiration, amazement, or awe” and “to think or speculate curiously.” Those definitions come together beautifully in our relationship with God. That’s why I define the wonder of God as those moments of spiritual awakening that create a desire to know God more. In other words, the wonder of God isn’t about an emotional experience or having some cool story to tell your friends, but the wonder of God makes us want more of God -- to go deeper and further than we’ve ever been before.

Why are you calling people to #LIVEWONDERSTRUCK?
If you look in the Gospels, what you’ll discover is that those who encountered Jesus were constantly left in wild amazement. They were awestruck by the teachings of Christ, the healings of Christ, the mind-bending miracles of Christ. Within the Gospel of Luke, we see words like “awe” and “wonder” and “marvel” at every turn. If this is the natural response to encountering Christ, how much more should it be for you and I -- who are invited to live in relationship with Christ as sons and daughters of our God Most High? We even created a free PDF that looks at some of these Scriptures. For a free copy, email us at wonderstruck [at] margaretfeinberg [dot] com and we’ll send you one.

Follow Margaret’s snarky, funny, and inspirational posts on Twitter, Facebook, or her blog. You can learn more about this great book by visiting www.margaretfeinberg.com/wonderstruck where she’s offering some crazy promos right now with up to $300 of free stuff! I’ve seen the book for as low as $7.57 ($14.99 retail) on Barnes & Noble for all you savvy shoppers.

Praise for For What It's Worth

Reading Karey White’s books, like eating chocolate cake, is always satisfying and brings a smile to my face. For What It’s Worth is light, romantic, and delicious. It’s a great pleasure read. Sit down and get lost in the charming world of wedding cakes and love. As an added bonus, each chapter starts with a recipe, so it’s a novel and cookbook all in one. A fun read!
—Teri Harman, KSL columnist, Studio 5 contributor, and author of Blood Moon, available June 22, 2013

I just loved the book -- loved it. Hated putting it down and hated finishing it. Karey White is my new Maeve Binchy, her writing as warm as the bakery her novel is set in. For What It’s Worth surprised me, made me smile, say “no” out loud in a public place. I love when a character feels like my sister. I didn’t want to finish it, so now I may try the recipes that began every chapter.
—Amanda Dickson, author and radio personality

This book oozes charm, romance, and mouth-watering recipes. If you want to escape reality and curl up with a darling story, For What It’s Worth is the perfect fit. Thank you, Karey White!
—Rachael Anderson, author

This is a book worth every penny of the price. In the business of baking wedding cakes, every detail must be perfection, but this story remembers that real life is oh-so-messy. White’s clear and honest writing left me hungry for good food, a close family, and a little romance. A beautiful marriage of food, family, and faith.

Excerpt from For What It's Worth

Dad reached over and patted my hand. “Abby,” he said, his voice earnest, “let me just remind you of a few things.” I nodded. “I remember a fourteen-year-old girl nearly jumping out of her skin with excitement when she got home from shopping with her mom because she’d found a five-dollar cake decorating kit. And I remember that same girl making a droopy cake with daisies that looked like white spiders.”

“Hey, be nice,” I said.

Dad continued. “I remember those dreadful cakes becoming beautiful.”

Mom jumped in. “And I remember a three-tier birthday cake that was prettier than any wedding cake I’d ever seen in my life. I was so proud of all those fondant roses, I wanted everyone I knew to see it.”

“All I know,” Dad said, “is that you have talent. Aunt Grace knew that. We all know it. If it doesn’t work out, you can find a hundred jobs like the one you have right now. But if you don’t try, you know you’ll regret it.” They all believed I could do it. Aunt Grace had staked a lot on that belief. Why was I so unsure? I stood up and hugged Dad.

“You know we’ll help you,” Mom said. I could practically see my simple life waving good-bye. I thought I might throw up.

“Of course we will,” Kate said. “You’ll be fine.” I wasn’t so sure about that. I think in order to be fine, you have to have oxygen, and right then I couldn’t breathe.

An Excerpt from "First Time: The Legend of Garison Fitch," by Samuel Ben White

In 1941, the Japanese attacked the west coast of America and had soon overthrown the underequipped and poorly led Mexican armies. By 1945, they had cast the Russians out of Alaska because the Russians were too busy fighting the man with the little mustache to worry about another section of frozen tundra. By 1948, the Japanese were knocking on Texas' door and the leaders at Austin were forced to recall many of their troupes from Europe in order to fight the more immediately threatening menace at home.

In 1952, it looked as if Hitler would finally be defeated. He was hard-pressed on both fronts and it looked like the end. Mussolini -- disheartened and weakened by pneumonia -- had surrendered the previous winter, and all looked black for the Third Reich. But the madman played his hole card.

It was an offensive of two airplanes that brought the war to an end. The first airplane left a German-held airfield in western France while its counterpart was refueling over the enemy territory of Russia. Then, it happened.

On June 17, 1952, the world entered the nuclear age as the first atomic bomb was dropped over London. The ultimate death count exceeded a million people when the fires were put out. The British were forced to surrender when another bomb dropped on Glasgow two days later.

About First Time: The Legend of Garison Fitch

"What if history didn't happen that way ... the first time?"

Garison Fitch was one of the most revered scientists in the Soviet Americas until he left fame behind to work on a secret project in his log cabin in the mountains of Marx.

But something went wrong. Instead of traveling interdimensionally, Garison has traveled through time ... twice.

Now, he's in something called "The United States of America," and a woman he's never met before is calling herself his wife. It it a hoax? Or has he somehow changed history?

Collin’s starting a new career, and has no business getting involved -- especially while staying with his roommate’s family, who very kindly offered to take him in for the holidays. Six Days of Christmas
by Kaylee Baldwin

When Natalie goes home with her best friend for Christmas, she expects plenty of quiet time to work on a winning ad so she can turn her dream internship into her dream job. Instead, she gets time-consuming Christmas festivities, a house full of children, and Jimmy, her best friend’s brother -- someone who makes her question everything she’s always thought she wanted.

Twist of Fate
by Rachael Anderson

When a postcard meant for Kenzie winds up in Ty’s mailbox, Ty’s faced with a decision. Should he tell her that her fiancé is breaking up with her and let it ruin her favorite holiday, or should he do what he’s wanted to do since he met her -- make a move and hope that he can win her over before she discovers there won’t be a wedding after all?

An Excerpt from Pretty Near Perfect by Jolene Perry:

She wasn’t kidding about the bookstore. I think we’ve been here for two hours. She’s come to show me two photography books, and I’m flattered she’d take the time. But now I’m ready to go, and I’ve just about given up finding her. We should have exchanged numbers.

When I find her she’s facing my direction, and a guy’s back is to me. He’s chattering in that nervous voice that all guys get when there’s something they really want to say but aren’t sure how to say it.

Her brows are down, she’s shifting her weight, and she’s chewing on her lower lip. If I was that guy, I’d take it as a sign that she’s not interested.

“...I mean, while you’re in town, you know? We could get a group together, and...”

Her eyes catch mine where I’m frozen at the end of an aisle of books.

“I’m here with someone,” she says. “But it was nice catching up with you, Nate.” She pats his shoulder as she moves straight toward me.

She tilts her head to the side and taps her cheek. Please, she mouths. My heart jumps. She wants me to kiss her cheek? She’s next to me in seconds. Too soon. Too soon to think. I lean down to kiss her cheek. She smells like vanilla, sweet, but not too sweet. My lips touch her skin, and it takes every ounce of strength in me to move away the way I know I should. My heart’s pounding. When did that happen?

“Where have you been?” I try to chuckle, but I’m sure it comes very strange.

“Ready to go?” She steps forward, sliding her arm around my waist, which is really just an invitation for me to slide my arm around hers, right?

Book Review and Giveaway: The Midwife of Hope River, by Patricia Harman

Unfortunately, I have to turn away most requests to review novels because I just don’t have the time to read all of them (as much as I would love to)! But when I received the query asking me to review The Midwife of Hope River, by Patricia Harman, it sounded so fascinating that I couldn’t resist. Fortunately, I was right: This book is wonderful!

This historical novel, written by a certified nurse midwife, follows the fictional life of Patience Murphy, a midwife in Appalachia during the Depression of the 1930s. When the story begins, she lives alone in a house she inherited from her late friend and mentor, the midwife who taught her how to deliver babies. This is a time of great strife when businesses are failing, unions are uprising, mines are caving in, blacks are persecuted, and nobody has the money to pay for Patience’s services. She is surviving mostly on the meager food and supplies donated by her customers. As Patience’s client list grows, she gets to know the stories of the people around her and gains a new roommate: a black woman who’s put out on the streets by her former employer because he can no longer afford her. Along the way, we also learn of Patience’s tragic past as an orphan, widow, wet nurse, and more. She also makes the acquaintance of the local vet, who will come to play a more prominent role in her life as time passes.

The Midwife of Hope River hauntingly captures the mood of the time, when fear, hunger and lack of hope dominate the landscape. But there’s also joy to be found in Patience’s growing relationships with those around her and, of course, in the innocent babies she brings into the world. Her past threatens to break her at times, but she rises stronger than ever when she realizes that loss is a part of life, and that everyone has their own burdens to bear. When they lean on each other, life is still sweet and filled with promise. The Midwife of Hope River is one of the most memorable books I’ve read this year.

Instead, she gets time-consuming Christmas festivities, a house full of children, and Jimmy, her best friend’s brother -- someone who makes her question everything she’s always thought she wanted.

Twist of Fate
by Rachael Anderson

When a postcard meant for Kenzie winds up in Ty's mailbox, Ty's faced with a decision. Should he tell her that her fiancé is breaking up with her and let it ruin her favorite holiday, or should he do what he’s wanted to do since he met her -- make a move and hope that he can win her over before she discovers there won’t be a wedding after all?

Author Jolene Perry

Jolene Perry is an enigmatic figure. She is most often seen behind her laptop, staring at the words flying onto the screen with reckless abandon.

She survived growing up in rural Alaska, driving like a lunatic, and her husband’s careers in the military, as a perpetual student, and an Alaska State Prosecutor. She also survived as a middle school math teacher using her degree of Political Science and French.

One day, Jolene was playing her guitar (probably something juvenile for her kids) when she wondered what it would be like to write a song for a rock star, and her first book was born. (That book has since been shelved.)

She now lives a very glamorous life as a stay-at-home mom, elbow deep in dirty dishes and peanut butter sandwiches. She doesn’t even attempt to keep up with the laundry because non-writing time is precious, and her family is sorta awesome.

For What It’s Worth Book Blast: Giveaway for a $50 Amazon Gift Card or PayPal Cash

For What It's Worth, by Karey White

Twenty-four-year-old Abby Benson has dreams of owning her own wedding cake shop. An inheritance from her aunt gives her the ability to make those dreams come true. She hires Dane, a handsome contractor, to help her get the bakery up and running, and soon they’re moving toward their own happy ending.

Unsure what to charge for her cakes, Abby has a crazy idea to let the customer decide what they think their cake is worth. This plan has its ups and downs, but the novelty of the idea makes her a local celebrity. When she is interviewed on television about the unusual idea, business booms and Abby has cake adventures she never dreamed possible. But as her fame grows, Abby is swept up in a whirlwind that threatens everything she values. With the challenges that face her, will she be able to determine what is worth the most?

Christmas Books Giveaway Hop: Enter to Win Two Christmas Books by Bestselling Author Fern Michaels!

Announcing the Christmas Books Giveaway Hop
December 1st to 7th

Welcome to the Christmas Books Giveaway Hop. If you love Christmas-themed books, you’ve come to the right place! All of the blogs participating in this hop will be offering giveaways of Christmas books (or gift cards to purchase Christmas books)! After you enter my giveaway below, you’ll find a link after the Rafflecopter form where you can hop around to the other giveaways in this hop.

For my giveaway, I am offering two fantastic Christmas books by bestselling author Fern Michaels. They include:

Holiday Magic

This book contains four irresistible stories:

“Holiday Magic,” by Fern Michaels
Ski shop manager Stephanie Marshall is counting on a holiday bonus so she can put a down payment on a home for herself and her daughters. But her handsome boss, Eddie O’Brien, has his own Christmas wish -- one that could lead to a lifetime of loving…

“A Very Merry Christmas,” by Cathy Lamb
Meredith Ghirlandaio’s to-do list is already overflowing, between keeping her B&B afloat, directing the town’s holiday concert, and trying to avoid rancher Logan Taylor. Doesn’t he know Meredith’s through with men -- even rugged, alpha, drop-dead-gorgeous men? Then again, some vows were meant to be broken…

“A Very Maui Christmas,” by Mary Carter
Tara Lane has the perfect plan to avoid another hellish family holiday -- fly to Maui. Too bad her family decided to follow suit. But a laid-back handyman is about to prove you don’t need snow to have a sparkling, sexy Christmas…

“A Cedar Key Christmas,” by Terri Dulong
Single mom Josie Sullivan is proud of her young daughter, Tess, for helping local fisherman Mr. Al restore his crumbling home. And when Mr. Al’s nephew, Ben, pays a visit, Josie realizes just how much Christmas magic one good deed can bring…

Christmas at Timberwoods

It’s the most wonderful time of the year … and for Heather Andrews, security manager at Timberwoods Mall, undoubtedly the busiest. But this Christmas, Heather has more to contend with than frazzled parents and disgruntled Santas. Angela Steinhart, a young woman who designed the mall’s spectacular holiday displays, has had the premonition that tragedy will strike on Christmas Eve. And Angela’s visions have a habit of coming true.

Heather would love to dismiss the warning as holiday stress. But the more she gets to know the quiet, lonely Angela, the more she trusts her. In Lex, her boss, Heather finds an ally -- and the glimmer of something more profound. And as the days count down, it will take all of her wits, hope, and unflagging courage to stop someone from destroying the season in one split second…

Note: I purchased these mass market paperbacks at the used bookstore, so they are in very nice but not perfect condition.

To enter, simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only and will end at 11:59 PM ET on Friday, December 7, 2012.
