I’m a huge Jane Austen fan, especially of her most well-known book, Pride and Prejudice, so I was naturally anxious to read My Own Mr. Darcy, by Karey White. In this book, we meet another young woman named Elizabeth, who becomes obsessed with the idea of meeting and marrying her own “Mr. Darcy” after seeing the movie starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen as a teenager. In fact, Elizabeth spurns all suitors through college because they don’t live up to her ideal as Mr. Darcy. Then, miraculously, “he” walks into her place of work one day. He looks and acts just like Mr. Darcy. And, incredibly, he asks her out. In the meantime, Elizabeth has just rejected another wonderful date for not being Darcy enough. Elizabeth’s roommate, Janessa, tired of Elizabeth throwing away good men, makes Elizabeth promise she’ll give her current rejected suitor, Chad, a total of ten dates so she can get to know him better. It turns out that he’s fantastic, and he feels the same about her, but her relationship with “Mr. Darcy” is heating up, too. Which man will Elizabeth choose?
If you’re a fan of romance novels, I’m sure you know the answer to that question, but this story was so fun and entertaining that I couldn’t put it down. Sometimes, I couldn’t blame Elizabeth for her romantic notions about Darcy (after all, I’ve done the same thing … but I prefer Colin Firth in the movie role), but other times I wanted to smack Elizabeth for not giving the best man the chance he deserved. The characters were well-drawn, and I enjoyed meeting Elizabeth’s roommate and Matthew’s co-worker, Meg (even though she was mean). This book asks the question, “Is it ever time to give up your dream?” and demonstrates that it’s not always easy to answer. If you love a good, clean romance (no sex at all), and especially if you’re a Jane Austen fan, you’ll want to add My Own Mr. Darcy, by Karey White to your to-read list. It will make you smile.
