Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: Music as Inspiration

It’s Wednesday! And that means it’s time for the Literary Addicts Weekly Meme! Every Wednesday, they suggest a fun theme to write about. The theme of this week: “Book playlists (pick a song list). Authors are famous for using music as inspiration. What would yours be?”

This is a tough question to answer because I don’t like to listen to music when I write. I find it too distracting. I want to listen to the song instead of the thoughts in my brain! But I attended a presentation once by an editor from a major publishing house, and he said that if he ever received a manuscript with a story like the one in this song, he would recommend publication! The song is “Travelin’ Soldier” by The Dixie Chicks, and it’s one of my favorite songs. If you haven’t heard it before, listen to it and read the words in the video below. You’ll see why it’s such an interesting story!

Does any music inspire you to write? CLICK HERE for links to the other blogs participating in this meme to see what songs awaken their muse!

By Kim Izzo

Katherine Shaw -- Kate -- is happy with her life. She has supportive friends, a glamorous magazine career, and a love of all things Jane Austen. Friends rally round, connecting her to freelance gigs and presenting her with a birthday gift -- title to land in Scotland -- that’s about to come in very handy. Turns out that Kate’s first assignment is to test an Austen-inspired theory: In the toughest economic times, is a wealthy man the only must-have accessory? What begins as an article turns into an opportunity as Kate -- now Lady Kate -- jetsets to Palm Beach, St. Moritz, and London, where, in keeping company with the elite, she meets prospects who make Mr. Darcy look like an amateur. But will rubbing shoulders with men of good fortune ever actually lead her to love? And will Kate be able to choose between Mr. Rich and Mr. Right?

One lucky winner will receive a paperback copy of The Jane Austen Marriage Manual: A Novel, by Kim Izzo. Enter through the easy Rafflecopter form below. None of the entries are mandatory. A Nail-Biting Excerpt from "A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest," by Herrick C. Erickson-Brigl!

A Scholar's Journey The Divine Tempest
Susan Heim on Writing is pleased to be a stop on the book tour for A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest, by Herrick C. Erickson-Brigl! This no-holds-barred fantasy brawl begins when the God of Justice and Retribution opens The Abyss and unleashes a vengeful demon upon the mortal realm of Therra. Now it is up to scholar Penndarius Greyson and his tormented protector, martial artist Soren Luna Mortalitas, to stop a crisis that would send shockwaves through the very fabric of creation. In addition, Penndarius is waging an internal battle with a disembodied presence attempting to possess his mind. The two heroes must avoid death or capture, but there is a catch: They have only one day to solve a riddle older than history before a dark host of unstoppable demons is released into the world.

Enjoy the following excerpt from A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest!

Penndarius found himself in familiar surroundings. He was in the open, flat, gray plane again. Soothing monotone clouds decorated the horizon. He felt a presence at his side, looked over, and saw a majestic, white-furred creature from the strange incident in Ed's tower. It was Rhea.

The events from the past came flooding to the fore. “Where are we?” he asked.

Rhea shook her head in apology. “Not now, my dear,” she said. “Feel the air quiver with the coming storm. They are almost here.”

The scholar felt the slight pang of pain in his head as he turned, and then he noticed a swath of evil enter the realm around him and muddy it, as if the perversion were a stain on the pristine serenity of the flat land. Roiling clouds of indigo that emitted cobalt lightning blighted the peaceful gray sky, and their chaotic presence was mirrored perfectly on the ground.

Malicious alien intent reached out almost tangibly to make itself known through resonating vibrations in the air. The pain in the scholar’s head steadily worsened as the intrusion became more visible.

In the invading gloom, Penndarius and Rhea watched as two figures appeared from afar. They walked inexorably toward the pair and seemed to vanish several times, only to reappear closer instantly until they were in front of them.

It was Diametries, accompanied by a creature unknown to Penndarius. In this place they were separate entities.

The creature reached up and scratched a deep line into a seeping wound where a wing had been long ago. The other wing seemed still to be intact. He rolled his eyes upward in ecstasy as the pain filtered into his consciousness. “Yesss...,” he said to himself with masochistic delight.

Rhea wrinkled her nose as if a putrid smell had entered the air around her. “Kestrel, it is such a...” She paused, as the words themselves seemed to corrupt the air around her, and then continued. “...a pleasure.”

“Salutations to the one of the great betrayers. Rhea, it is so wonderful to see you. My claws are aching to repay the debt they owe you from when last we met,” Kestrel asserted and then laughed sardonically as his eyes glinted with danger. He flexed his long, sharp, deep blue claws to accentuate his meaning.

“What is he?” Penndarius asked as he examined the creature before him.

“I regret to say that he is one of my kind,” Rhea said with obvious distaste.

Diametries drew his hand diagonally across the air with disdain. “The history lesson is over,” he interrupted. “Erase their essences, and be done with it, creature,” he commanded coldly. “I tire of this banter.”

“Aye, my lord ... with pleasure,” Kestrel said as he grinned with excitement and began to crawl toward Penndarius and Rhea.

Rhea moved in front of Penndarius. “I will not allow this boy to come to harm,” she said, and her action surprised the scholar.

Kestrel sneered. “What reasons do you -- ah, I see ... a contract. You slipped up, didn’t you?” he asked, and his eyes betrayed his interest. “How surprising.”

“Come forward as you will,” Rhea said as she took up a protective stance, and a white barrier lined with a tinge of green formed in front of her and Penndarius.

“Aye, I will!” Kestrel roared in delight to the molten gold-and-azure sky and then bounded toward Rhea and clawed at her barrier with his hand. The attack left deep, jagged blue lines in her wall of defense, deep crevices that burned with residual sapphire-colored fire.

Rhea fought back with sweeping waves of her white-furred hands that sent shockwaves rippling along the pale ground.

As the two vaedziur met in battle, the pain in Penndarius’s head went from noticeable to debilitating and brought him to his knees, like a knife plunging through his temples and being twisted back and forth.

With maniacal laugher, Kestrel continued to hack and slash at random while Rhea dodged from left to right, throwing up her barrier to block his attacks. Whenever she could, she retaliated, but it became apparent that Kestrel was more than able to match her in combat, and more jagged lines appeared as he cut her barrier to ribbons.

Diametries smiled as he watched the fight unfold. “It will not be much longer,” he asserted with deathly calm.

Expelling a cry, Rhea threw a punch, slamming Kestrel backwards with a powerful wave of emerald-hued energy. Kestrel skidded along the ground, digging one of his clawed hands into the gray surface and leaving swaths of indigo fire in his wake. Then he rebounded to continue his assault.

The hacking and throbbing lacerated Penndarius’s mind repeatedly and seemed to increase in intensity.

“This is taking too long,” Diametries said with disgust. He raised his hands, and a golden glow emanated from the tips of his fingers. Five golden threads of energy extended from the Speaker’s hand, lashing out at Rhea and slamming into her.

Rhea saw the attack coming and had to cross her white arms protectively across her body. She was instantly forced on the defense.

Kestrel pressed his advantage and pounced on her, slashing against her barrier. All the while he laughed maniacally as he kept her backpedaling.

Rhea was unable to retaliate against either opponent through the continuous onslaught and was continually forced back. She turned her head toward Penndarius in agony as she struggled.

“I cannot hold!” she yelled frantically. “I need you, Penndarius!”

Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: My Book Hoard

It’s Wednesday! And that means it’s time for the Literary Addicts Weekly Meme! Every Wednesday, they suggest a fun theme to write about. The theme of this week: “Show us your book hoard! Take a picture and show us what you have!

I wish I had been asked this question about a month ago because I would have had SO much to show you! I had two large bookcases in my bedroom that were overflowing with books, plus a nightstand that was unrecognizable as a piece of furniture because it was covered with so many books. But my husband and I decided to replace the carpeting in our bedroom with bamboo flooring, and so we did a major clean-up! All the furniture had to be moved out of the bedroom, so I donated a lot of my books to our library’s used bookstore, and we boxed up many more. So, for now, you get to see the two shelves of books that are on my “to-read list.”

Can you see why I can’t accept many book reviews? I have enough books lined up to read for years. And this doesn’t even include the books I have downloaded to my Nook or those I’ve saved on my Amazon wish list. There are just too many wonderful books in the world! I’m getting stressed out just thinking about it…

So, while I go grab a cup of tea (or something stronger) to de-stress, I’d love to know: What does your book hoard look like?

Moonlit Book Blast: Giveaway for a $50 Amazon Gift Card or PayPal Cash

Moonlit

Eighteen-year-old Tanzy Hightower knows horses and has grown up with them on Wildwood Farm. She also knows not to venture beyond the trees that line the pasture. Things happen out there that can’t be explained. Or undone. Worse, no one but she and the horses can see what lurks in the shadows of the woods.

When a moonlit ride turns into a terrifying chase, Tanzy is left to question everything, from the freak accident that killed her father to the very blood in her veins. Broken and confused, she turns to Lucas, a scarred, beautiful stranger, and to Vanessa, a charming new friend who has everything Tanzy doesn’t.

But why do they seem to know more about her than she knows herself?

Praise

“Virginia’s trees look like they’re burning. Most of them blaze crimson or gold, but some still have a chokehold on their green. I wish they’d give it up already. Leaves are more beautiful when they’re dying.”

And so Moonlit begins. From here the story rolls from one twist to another with many vivid characters whose motives are hard to predict. I found myself being suspicious of everyone, wanting to tell Tanzy to be very careful. The deeper I fell into the plot, the more questions kept rising to the surface. But not to worry, all of my questions were answered. Appropriate for all ages, if you love paranormal fantasy mixed with suspense, mystery and other-worldly romance, you’ll love this novel!
~Author Julie Ford

Prologue

The first anniversary of my father’s death was even harder on my mother. Back then, I thought she was haunted most by what she didn’t know. I refused to blame her when she raged above me on our staircase that night, drunk and sad and angry. When she made me promise I’d never ride again. When she hurled a half-full bottle of vodka at my face and it exploded on the wooden stairs at my feet. I hadn’t tried to get out of the way. She had just missed.

I wanted to tell her that knowledge was no solace, that what you know can burn inside you until there’s nothing left but guilt and ash. I also wanted to protect her from losing the only piece of him she had left. So I didn’t say a word.

She currently coaches a hunt seat equitation team that competes in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association, and lives with her family in the foothills of north Georgia. When she’s not working on the next installment of the Moonlit series, she is either in the saddle or exploring the great outdoors with her daughter. Moonlit is her first book.

Helga Book Blast: Giveaway for a $100 Amazon Gift Card or PayPal Cash

Helga: Out of Hedgelands

From Author Rick Johnson: Twelve-year-old Helga has more danger in her life than most beasts her age -- Wrackshee slavers after her, a vicious attack by bandits that nearly kills her, a race against dragons pursuing her, and leading a daring rebellion to save her life and rescue friends and family from the insidious WooZan. And that is just the beginning. But what do you expect when you are a young beast who just can’t see the stupid rules of the world making any sense? Helga can’t accept things as they are and ends up taking on not just one, but two all-powerful, supreme tyrants in two different realms.

Helga never intended to lead a revolution. It just sort of happened because she wouldn’t go along with the “rules of normal” that keep tyrants in power and entire societies enslaved. Beginning on a dangerous quest to solve some mysteries in her own past, Helga leads her quirky comrades on a journey that will not only forever change them, but upset ancient civilizations.

As an author, I’m drawn to eccentric, unexpected characters: those who surprise because they hear a distant galaxy, see a different music, create their own fragrance rather than get hooked on a soundtrack; the child who has her own ideas about how the emperor is dressed; the lunatics and rebels who tell stories on the boundaries. Helga’s unusual story will take readers to worlds they never imagined -- definitely a whole new ride.

Time and again, the unconventional heroine and her eccentric comrades overcome ominous tyrants and black-hearted slavers, not by battling to the last beast standing, but by being the first beast to think differently.

Helga: Out of Hedgelands is divided into three books that introduce the epic saga of the Wood Cow clan and their role in overturning centuries of slavery and tyranny. This story will continue in additional volumes of the Wood Cow Chronicles now in development. Over the series of current and future volumes, the entire history of the Wood Cow clan, the fall of Maev Astuté, and the coming of Lord Farseeker to the Outer Rings, will be told.

Book Trailer

Author Rick Johnson

I am a native of the Great Plains, having grown up on a farm in the Platte River Valley of western Nebraska. I love the wild beauty of the Plains and nearby Rocky Mountains -- the too hot, too cold, too empty, too full of life extremes. Typically, the awesomely diverse and the awesomely stark are much the same, even as they are different. Although I have lived in Michigan, North Carolina, and British Columbia, the western plains, mountains, and desert are in my heart.

As my day job, for over thirty years I have been a faculty member and administrator in higher education. Teaching broadly in the liberal arts, including creative writing, my professional publications include educational materials, poems, and 28 stories for young readers. During my spare hours, I have also collected and carefully studied the records of former times upon which the Wood Cow Chronicles are based. It is my privilege to bring this astonishing saga to light.

The Wood Cow Chronicles have been researched and written with the irreplaceable assistance of Barbara, my beloved wife of more than thirty-five years, and our children. Indeed, the essential research into the history of the Wood Cows has been conducted during the odd hours of family reading and storytelling “around the campfire” as we say -- even when there is no campfire! This research continues and grows richer as our family expands across generations and continents.

Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: What Character Would You Be?

It’s Wednesday! And that means it’s time for the Literary Addicts Weekly Meme! Every Wednesday, they suggest a fun theme to write about. The theme of this week is “What character would you be?” Share yours!

Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be Susan Pevensie from the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. First of all, she shared my name and was the oldest sister, like me. But best of all, she got to go on great adventures in Narnia and even become a queen! And after she was a queen, she got to relive her childhood all over again back in England. She was very brave and a great shot with an arrow. And she was pretty, too. What’s not to like?

So, now it’s your turn: What character would you be?

Titanic Giveaway Hop
April 8th to 14th

Featuring Books with
Tragic Disasters & Epic Love Stories

Welcome to the Titanic Giveaway Hop! Every blog participating in this event is featuring a book with a tragic disaster or epic love story. For my giveaway, I am offering a novel that takes place during the tsunami of 2004 in Indonesia.

The Killing Sea: A Novel About the Tsunami That Stunned the World
By Richard Lewis

Ruslan slipped away from the café and the curious onlookers. He began to run, not knowing exactly why, but instinct making him head away from the sea....

And in the distance, along the seafront of Ujung Karang, screams rose from a hundred, a thousand, mouths.

Aceh, Indonesia. December 2004. Ruslan, an Indonesian boy, and Sarah, an American girl, are brought together in the aftermath of the devastating tsunami. Ruslan is searching for his missing father, while Sarah is trying to get medical treatment for her sick brother. Together they travel through the destruction, barely believing all that they see.

The Killing Sea is a high-stakes survival story that puts a human face on a terrible tragedy.

About the Author: Richard Lewis, who lives in Indonesia, was there during the tsunami and worked as a relief worker in Aceh in the days and weeks following it. This novel is based on his firsthand experiences.

Note: Cover differs from the one shown above. I purchased this book from my local library’s bookstore, so the book is in slightly used but excellent condition. This is a HARDCOVER book!
