Book Review: "The Shadow of Your Smile," by Susan May Warren
I've shared reviews of several books by Susan May Warren, one of my favorite Christian authors. The Shadow of Your Smile is part of her Deep Haven series, where every story takes place in Deep Haven, Minnesota. The books don't need to be read in any particular order, however, as each one is about a different family and they aren't chronological.
In The Shadow of Your Smile, we meet Noelle and Eli, who are heading toward divorce when their marriage splinters following the death of their beloved teenage daughter. They both grieve differently, and this has driven a deep wedge in their relationship. But when a freak accident erases the past 25 years of Noelle's memories, she must reacquaint herself with the man she once loved, her two surviving sons -- and the person she was. Can Noelle and Eli recapture what they lost and fall in love again? What will happen when Noelle finds out that she had a daughter whose life was violently ended?
Like all of Warren's books, the people in this novel feel real. Eli is on the verge of having an affair with the widow of a former friend, who seems to need him more than his wife. Eli and Noelle's oldest son decides to become a police officer like his father so he can protect his family from further violence. And their teenage son is just trying to cope with high school, his sister's death, and two parents who are no longer heroes in his eyes. They're all struggling to find a new future, hopefully one that includes staying together. The Shadow of Your Smile is a thought-provoking story of loss, family, and faith.
