Grammar Lesson: Dollars and Cents

Frequently, people incorrectly specify monetary values.

INCORRECT: $25 dollars

In this case, the dollar sign already indicates that you are talking about dollars. You don't need the word, too.

CORRECT: $25
CORRECT: 25 dollars
CORRECT: twenty-five dollars

Values under a dollar can also be stated incorrectly.

INCORRECT: .25 cents
INCORRECT: .25¢

In the case above, you're actually talking about a quarter of a penny, not a quarter of a dollar! Use one of these formats instead:

CORRECT: 25 cents
CORRECT: 25¢
CORRECT: $.25
CORRECT: twenty-five cents
