The Only Boy Book Blast: Giveaway for a $100 Amazon Gift Card or PayPal Cash

The only boy
The Only Boy by Jordan Locke

Mary is stuck in Section One, living with three hundred women in a crumbling hospital. She wonders what life was like two centuries ago, before the Cleansing wiped out all the men. But the rules—the Matriarch's senseless rules—prevent her from exploring the vacant city to find out.

Taylor's got a dangerous secret: he's a boy. His compound's been destroyed, and he's been relocated to Section One. Living under the Matriarch means giving up possessions, eating canned food and avoiding all physical contact. Baggy clothes hide his flat chest and skinny legs, but if anyone discovers what lies beneath, he'll be exiled. Maybe even executed.

Mary's never seen a boy—the Matriarch cut the pictures of men from the textbooks—and she doesn't suspect Taylor's secret. If she knew, she might understand the need to stop the girls from teasing him. If she knew, she might realize why she breaks the rules, just to be near him. Then again, she might be frightened to death of him.

Taylor should go. The Matriarch is watching his every move. But running means leaving Mary—and braving the land beyond the compound's boundaries.

Excerpt and Secret Word (Scavenger Hunt Stop 3)!

When she died, I had just turned twelve. I got the feeling right away that no one really knew what to do with me. I didn’t fit into anyone’s plans. If I were a pure blooded elf, they would have taken me straight to a prison camp. If I were a human, someone would have adopted me. I wasn’t either, and yet I was both at the same time. I think the guards were just baffled that my mother had done such a good job of hiding me for so long, or that she’d somehow managed to have an affair with a human man.

Ulric Broadfeather was the only one who would take me in, and I’m pretty sure he only did it because my mother had left a letter behind naming him as my biological father. If it weren’t for the public shame of disowning a child, he probably would have just let me go to a prison camp anyway.

From the very beginning, my father was the most frightening man I had ever known. He was hugely tall, like a knight, and stronger than anyone else I had ever seen. Once, I saw him pick up and pull the family wagon while it was loaded with bags of grain all by himself. He could have crushed my neck with one hand if he wanted to. His hair was jet-black like mine, except it was cut short. My mom always insisted I wear my hair long, like gray elves traditionally did. I also had his cold blue eyes that were the same color as glacier water. There definitely wasn’t any doubt he was my father. I looked too much like him for anyone to deny it.

Scents and Senses: Supernatural Friends. What the fairy tales didn’t tell you

Playing the role of a knight in shining armor is more complicated than it seems in the storybooks, as sixteen-year-old Joy discovers when she repeatedly comes to the rescue of a fifteen-year-old human. But when she meddles in the girl’s social life, Starra sends her packing.

Starra is determined to completely dissociate herself from the subterranean creature that has manipulated her life and cast her into the limelight. However, her resolve is soon tested when she becomes involved in a critical situation where supernatural assistance can enable her to carry out a daring plot.

Eventually, Starra’s involvement with her new other-wordly friends extracts a heavy price when she is beset by challenges that range from the down-to-earth struggles of a typical teenage student to the realm of the fantastic. Nothing prepares her, however, for the ultimate challenge.

Excerpt
Joy

Ever since I’ve been old enough to kick off on a condor with my own two chicken feet, I’ve been drilled to mind my own business.

Mind your own business, the first of the American Ten Commandments.

It’s not one I subscribe to, even though in our community, not minding my own business means more than social suicide; it’s a crime when we ascend above ground.

For thousands of years we deeems have kept away from the creatures running over our heads with their five-toed feet. So if anyone in my community gets wind of the risky job I’m on these days, I’m practically a goner. But that doesn’t stop me from shadowing a certain teenage fivetoe.

There’s also a totally different occupational hazard involved in this position I’ve created for myself, one I’m suffering from right now: this job occasionally makes school seem relatively stimulating. Yawn. I’ve played too many Angry Condor games to count since Starra got involved in some fantasy book a couple of hours ago and lost contact with the real world. Even if I knew how to become visible to the fivetoe eye and suddenly revealed myself, I bet she wouldn’t notice me, the cute teen perched on her windowsill.

Time simply refuses to advance, and I have to resort to counting the spider eggs cocooned in their nest on a nearby tree branch. A sudden sigh interrupts my lame occupation. There’s a starry look in the big eyes, and I notice the novel is slipping out of Starra’s dreamy grip. This is my window of opportunity! I finger the starchy edge of the book jacket and coax the book forward.

Thud. The book falls to the floor, and the movement seems to bring Starra back to her senses. At last she grabs a hoodie and sets out, probably for one of her night excursions on the Vista Del Mar Path. Are we running or biking tonight?

Running it is. I jog behind her, finding the excursion by the shoreline an improvement to watching her read. At least we are moving.

She runs for half an hour, at a speed faster than the sea turtle pace usual for fivetoes. Then she slows to a stop at a jagged rock, half-submerged in the ocean. I groan quietly and contemplate leaving. From experience, I know she’ll climb to the top of her rock and dream away. I start backing off, but when I’m some fifty feet away, I look back. Starra makes a pretty picture there, her silhouette perched high on the rock. Her long legs are tucked under her, and her head hangs back as she keeps her gaze on the stars above. If only she would let loose the heavy dark mane of hair she always twists up at the back of her neck, she would truly look like a mermaid risen from the sea.

Something pulls me back to her. I can’t explain it, but I have a feeling trouble is lurking nearby, waiting to snatch her in its net.

My chicken feet make an about face and follow Starra home as she takes the shorter route through town.

Guest Post from Author A. Lynden Rolland

Note from Susan: For the guest post, I told the author that I was curious to know more about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and why she chose to have her main character have this disease. I thought perhaps there might be a real-life connection…

Thank you so much for allowing me to visit today!

Oddly, there is no real-life connection. Just complete curiosity and the desire for something unique.

In Of Breakable Things, most of my characters are dead. It wasn't my intention for this to happen, but as the story unfolded in my mind, the main character was ill and would die young, and that is when her story really began. Her hindrances made her who she was, and there were no miracles to save her. She is flawed and na├»ve and sheltered. This makes her all the more skeptical and curious when she enters a world manipulated by the mind, a world where bones and breaks no longer matter. But she can’t quite tell her mind to follow such elastic rules. I needed her to have a difficult time letting go of her limitations. I needed her to be literally breakable.

When I saw the term, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), during my research process, it struck a chord. It almost felt like passing a stranger on the street and knowing I had seen her somewhere before. As a kid, my friends and I would go to the town playground, and sometimes there was a little girl who only went on the swings. She never did anything else. She said she wasn’t allowed. She had these gigantic eyes and tiny frame and thick hair. She was otherworldly. I honestly can’t remember specifically what she told me she had, but I’m pretty positive it was Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. If it wasn’t, it doesn’t matter because she is the picture I see in my head when I see Alex.

What is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome? I had no clue until I started researching hereditary disorders (heredity plays a pivotal role in the story). EDS is a tissue disorder, and there are different types. It can be as mild as bruising easily or having elastic skin. I needed Alex to have a more severe case, so she has vascular EDS.

It's difficult to describe in layman's terms, so I requested approval from the powers that be, and (rubbing hands together) here is a small excerpt from Of Breakable Things. The scene is written from the perspective of Alex's best friend, Chase, as an eight-year-old:

Chase couldn’t fathom the idea that his best friend was sick. Alex had too much energy. When he stood next to her, he could feel it like the static electricity he learned about in science class. So then how could she somehow have less life than he did?

He knew it was called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and he’d heard Alex’s doctor say things like type four and vascular and dangerous. He knew Alex’s mother had been sick with it, too. And her mother was dead.

“They don’t look any different to me,” Chase whispered to his mother. That morning they had driven into the city so Alex could attend some sort of meeting. There was a huge banner outside the Baltimore Convention Center that read Learning Conference: Living with EDS. Jonas had snorted and told Alex she was going to a freak show. Chase had punched him in the belly, and to his shock and amazement, his mother turned her head and didn’t scold him. And now, sitting outside the convention center, the people walking inside didn’t look strange at all.

“There are different kinds of EDS,” Danya explained to him, ruffling his hair. “Some are worse than others.”

“Worse than Alex’s?”

Danya shifted on the bench. “No. Alex has the worst kind.”

“She doesn’t look sick.”

“That’s because most of it is inside her body.” She pointed to his arm. “You have tissues in there. Don’t scrunch your face like that! They aren’t the same kind that you blow your nose with. Your tissues hold your body together. Alex’s tissues don’t work quite as well as yours.”

No kidding. One time he’d pulled on her arm to get her attention and her shoulder fell out of its socket. He’d cried the entire way to the hospital because he’d hurt her.

“In our tissues, we have something called collagen. And if collagen is like the glue of body, the normal person has liquid cement while Alex has cheap Elmer’s glue.”

“Is that why Jonas says that Alex was assembled at Kmart?”

His mother rolled her eyes. “Probably, but Jonas really shouldn’t say that. I’ll speak to him.”

Chase fiddled with the Velcro on the pocket of his shorts. “I still don’t get it.”

“What?”

“Why is it such a big a deal?”

“Tissues support your skin, which is why Alex bruises easily. And they hold your bones together, which is why hers are more likely to break.”

“But broken bones don’t kill you,” he argued. “Why did her mom die?”

His mother’s face crumbled, and he felt that pang in his chest that told him he’d said something wrong. “I’m sorry.”

“No, don’t be sorry. I just miss her.” Between her hands, she rolled a pamphlet she’d picked up that morning at the convention. “Tissues also support your organs. Like your heart. That’s an organ. The things inside you keep you alive, and if they aren’t supported properly, you could bleed inside your body. That’s what happened to Alex’s mommy when Alex was born. They couldn’t stop the bleeding.”

“Is that why her dad hates her?”

“He doesn’t hate her.”

Chase looked at his mom doubtfully, but quickly shifted his attention to several people exiting the convention center. His heart fluttered in hope, but his friend wasn’t among them. He couldn’t believe his mother had made him stay out here instead of letting him go in with Alex. This was all Miss Petra’s fault. Their teacher was the one to suggest that Alex’s friendship with the Lasalles might be detrimental to her health. She was always trying to put them in separate groups during class or encouraging Alex to hang out with the other girls during recess. Thankfully, Alex ignored the suggestions. But within the past few months, Alex had broken three different bones during their adventures with his brothers. So her dumb doctor recommended she meet other kids who were “limited” too.

A selfish part of Chase wanted Alex to come screaming out of that door. Usually they joked about her illness. They would look at the bruises on her arms and laugh about what they saw … like lying in the grass and finding images in the clouds, only these clouds were stormy. She was going to be sick no matter what, so what good would it do to sit around and talk about it? Alex didn’t like to think she was different, so he was sure she wouldn’t enjoy this experience. Or at least that’s what he hoped. After all, he needed her as much as she needed him.

She just never understood that.

Tracie Peterson Celebrates 100 Books with an iPad Mini Giveaway & A SENSIBLE ARRANGEMENT Live Webcast Event!

About the book: A Lone Star Brides book.

Marty Dandridge Olson is ready to leave behind the pain of the past.

Answering an advertisement for a "Lone Star bride," she leaves her Texas ranch and heads to Denver to marry a man she doesn't know.

Jake Wythe is the man waiting for her.

Burned by love, he marries now simply to satisfy the board of Morgan Bank, which believes a man of his standing in society should be wed. Together Jake and Marty agree they are done with romance and love and will make this nothing more than a marriage of convenience.

When missing money and a collapsing economy threaten his job, Jake's yearning to return to ranching grows ever stronger, much to Marty's dismay. But a fondness has grown between them, as well, further complicating matters.

What will happen when their relationship shifts in unexpected ways ... and dreams and secrets collide?

My review:
I've always been a softie for "arranged marriage" storylines, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review A Sensible Arrangement. The word "sensible" describes not only the characters' marriage, but also the characters themselves. Jake is doing the sensible thing by working at a bank job he deplores so he can save up his money to purchase a ranch, a lifelong dream. Marty does the sensible thing in trying to support herself through an arranged marriage, one of the few options open to an impoverished woman in 1892. After her husband is killed in a ranch accident, she doesn't wish to continue to be a burden to her sister and family, so she accepts a proposal of marriage from a man she's never met. It wouldn't be spoiling the plot to tell the reader that Jake and Marty begin to have romantic feelings for each other, but there's a big problem: Jake dreams of returning to Texas, while Marty has no desire to go back to ranching in Texas after her husband's death. I really enjoyed getting to know both of these characters. Marty is a pistol-packing lady who prevents a stage robbery as the story begins, and Jake is a man who's been bruised by a turbulent love life in the past. Both find healing together. I can't wait to read more about Marty and Jake's adventures in the next book in the Lone Star Brides series.
