May I Suggest Giveaway Hop: Enter to Win "Housewitch" by Katie Schickel (Hardcover)

Welcome to the May I Suggest Giveaway Hop! Every blogger in this hop is giving away a book they thought was amazing or incredible (or a gift card to purchase one). For my giveaway, I am offering a hardcover copy of Housewitch, by Katie Schickel!

About the book:
Former foster child, now a stay-at-home mom of three, Allison Darling desperately wants to fit in with the latte-drinking, hundred-dollar-yoga-pants-wearing moms who run her charming seaside town, Monrovia. Constantly feeling like an outsider, Allison dreams of more for her children.

When Allison’s estranged mother passes away, her previously dormant special talents emerge. Soon she is reunited with the family that abandoned her and learns of their heartbreaking legacy.

At the same time, the Glamour Girls, a soap-selling company run by the most popular women in Monrovia, recruits Allison to join them. They have a monopoly on everything in town, from bake sales to business deals.

But once you’re a Glamour Girl, there’s no going back.

Suddenly caught between the rag-tag, hippie relatives she once so desperately wanted and the rich, charismatic Glamour Girls, Allison is unsure where she fits in. Could she come to trust the strange outcast family that abandoned her, or really hang with the most powerful, glamorous women in town?

For Allison, it’s like high school all over again, except this time, the mean girls have more than killer manicures, and the nobodies aren’t sulking in the band hall. They’re adults. They’ve got husbands, children, and livelihoods on the line. And they also happen to be witches.

Allison’s decision to lend her powerful magical talents to either group will change Monrovia -- and Allison -- forever.

My thoughts:
I really love novels about witchcraft, and this is one of my new favorites. It’s a wonderful blend of comedy and suspense. Allison is not your typical witch. She’s insecure as the result of growing up as a foster child after her mother, a witch, gave her away. Her vague memories of her time with her mother have convinced her that she wants no part of her witchcraft legacy. But she’s lured in by a coven of popular women in town who seem to have the confidence and riches that Allison lacks. Despite her better instincts, she falls under their spell, only to realize too late that there’s an ulterior motive for their acceptance of her. And when she dares to go against them, it’s her family who may pay the ultimate price. This is so much more than a story of witchcraft (although that part is fun, and there’s plenty of humor in this book). It’s also about yearning for acceptance and the things we don’t have, but finding out that there’s always a hidden cost when we get too much. Despite her magic powers, Allison is like every woman who wants to be a better wife, mother and friend, and I could really relate to her character. Now, if only I had her magic!

  3. The book sound awesome. I am intrigued by her history as a foster child, as I am a child protective investigator, and I love to read about how kids who come out of the system do later in life. I understand that's fiction, still I'm curious. As investigators we're involved in the beginning, we don't get to see many outcomes. Thanks for participating in the hop! dachshundlady@comcast.net💖
