A Diary’s House Book Tour: Enter to Win a Kindle Fire and Autographed Books! (GIVEAWAY; US/CAN)

A Diary’s House: Where True Love Endures
A Diary’s House is about adventure, lost love, and the hope that dreams, even those in the final years of life, can at last prevail. It is of a young boy’s attempt to become a man, the once-lost secrets of a diary, a sweeping romance that transcends time and place. It is more than a boy’s journey into manhood -- the mysteries of so many lives unknowingly intertwined, now brought together in a climatic ending, all from the engrossing world embedded in a forgotten diary -- a diary of a woman.

Born in the vast and looming mountains of North Carolina during the 1870s, Landon Hampshire always remembered the folklore and legendary tales his father told him during his early childhood about the people of the Kituhwa (Cherokee) and the birth of this tribal nation -- an enchanting story he could never forget. Incorporating the aid of an eccentric old French trapper (old man Montague), Landon and his friends set out on an adventure. Their initial intention is to discover treasure and become men, but what Landon will eventually come to discover is more than he ever bargained for.

Landon didn’t realize his boyhood adventure would yield the incredible journey he ultimately experiences -- going down the mysterious and mystical Randola River. At the base of the river is an island even more mysterious than the Randola itself. The island releases many of its mysteries, yet many more are created when Landon discovers, on the island, a diary of a young woman who lived forty years prior during the 1830s (Trail of Tears). The diary entries are hopeful, though haunting. They reveal, in intimate detail, the life and dreams of this very special young girl who is turning into a woman of beauty and adventure, her love for a Cherokee boy, and the trials she will ultimately face. Her story unfolds through the reading of her diary, and Landon suddenly finds himself caught up in a sweeping, empowering world of re-invention and ultimate redemption.

C. David Murphy

I am a writer first and foremost. Anyone who reads my works will instantly know this. I have found no greater joy on this earth than to be close to God and nature, exploring the serenity of landscapes, waterfalls, epic mountains, meadows and grasslands. To sit on those spots of earth and write to where my imagination will take me yields a tremendous amount of peace and serenity. To create characters with true and genuine emotions, feel their heartbeat through every word I write; their trials, their hopes and ambitions; to breathe life into their eyes and see their soul become one with me and the reader is absolutely amazing. I simply love to create on that venue and canvas, to affect change in the lives of others. It is my hope, when someone picks up my stories and reads the full weight of them, that somehow I have effected change in their lives, brought them to places they could never have imagined before, and moved them to believe in humanity again -- to go out into the world and create ‘goodwill towards all.’

The Diary’s House is C. David Murphy’s first digitally published novel. He is also the author of two Shakespearean-style genre plays, In the Years of the Ages and Hildengrass. He is currently finalizing his next novel, When Tomorrow Never Comes and The Chronicles of Good and Evil -- Dracula’s Lair/The Darkest Tower, both due out later this year. Also, the sequel to A Diary’s House is in the works -- The Long Journey Home, due out the first part of 2013.

The king of Scotland is in a snit, which means Britt MacKinnon, proud Captain of the King’s Guard, has an onerous task: fetch Alexander’s favorite paramour back to the royal bed -- now. Never mind that the crown should be about the business of getting a legitimate heir, especially since England’s Edward I would love nothing more than to seize an empty Scottish throne.

When the handsome soldier appears on her doorstep, Geneen Armstrong has to think quickly. Her twin lies abed in her cottage, pregnant with the king’s bastard. If the barren queen learns the truth, the foolish girl’s life won’t be worth a farthing.

She must somehow transform her graceless, plain-spoken self into her vivacious, talented sister. Then, after the court is convinced she carries no child, use her herbal knowledge to sour the king’s taste for her sister’s company -- for good.

By the time Britt realizes this unusually articulate, ungodly stubborn woman is the wrong woman, tendrils of attraction have already tightened into a bond that will be tested when the king’s unexpected death puts Scotland’s very destiny at stake -- and unleashes an ever-tangling web of court intrigues, secrets … and lies.

Warning: Men in kilts, Scottish accents and a feisty heroine contained herein. A more perfect historical romance doesnae exist.

Julian gazed at Camille in her black dress with its crocheted look. It was sexy. An approving moan rumbled up his throat and he grabbed her hand, moving toward an inner wall inside the third floor salon. He glanced at her, winked and popped a wall panel open.

A soft gasp escaped her. “What the....”

“There are tunnels all over the estate.” He coaxed her inside. “We’ll make our escape through here.” It beat running into Papa, Claudette, or Madeleine in the hallways.

“Ooh, I feel like a spy.” She giggled as they enter the dimly lit tunnel.

Julian chuckled. “Yeah. A spy whose sanity depends on her escape.” He quickened his pace. He wasn’t the only one well-versed in these tunnel paths. The quicker they got outside and through the gardens, the better.

They hurried through corridors, descended steps cut into the ground and rounded corners, all in near-darkness. Camille tightened her grip on his hand.

“Don’t worry, Chéri. I know this place inside and out.”

“God, I hope so.” Her rich laughter wrapped him in amusement.

“We’re almost there,” he said in a low, husky voice.

After a few more feet and another curve to the left, Julian gave Camille a tug and pulled her closer before stopping to push his way through the outside exit.

The twilight of a setting sun filtered inside, casting a flattering glow over Camille. Her golden hair glistened like strands of lustrous glass, and he felt a ripple of excitement when her mouth curved into a tempting smile.

“What are the chances somebody’s going to be waiting for us out here?” she asked, and he got the feeling she was trying to be funny. And she would be, so long as she wasn’t right.

“I’ll let you know.” He checked the immediate area just outside the exit.

All clear. Good. Not that he was afraid to face them. But this was more fun. Sexy even. A faint light twinkling in her blue eyes told him she was just as excited.

Julian latched onto Camille’s hand. Joy bubbled over in her laughter as they raced along designated paths through the rose garden. Her happiness brought Julian a sense of satisfaction. It’d been a long time since he’d had this much fun.

Adrenaline sped through him, increasing ferociously when the tunneled gateway to the river came into view. Just as he’d arranged, a speedboat was waiting at water’s edge, ready to assist them in their escape.

Julian helped Camille before climbing aboard. The boat thundered to life and the engine’s vibrations roared through him, stimulating his adrenaline and his aspirations. He’d taken plenty of boat rides, and with a number of girls including Madeleine, but none had aroused him like this ride with Camille. Maybe it was just the thrill of the escape. Yes. That had to be the reason.

Camille sat on the seat next to him, perched in a model-like pose. Her legs, long and tanned, rose from red shoes and traveled seductively up until they disappeared underneath a black cocktail dress riding midway up her thighs. He liked the dress when they’d bought it in London, and he liked it now—especially now, as he envisioned slipping his hands beneath the fabric in an exploring fashion.

The boat charged down the winding river and a warm summer’s wind whipped Julian’s hair around wildly. Raking it back, he looked at Camille. Their gazes met, and a faint delicate flush glowed against her face.

My First "Bestseller"!

Note: I originally published this on my parenting blog in January 2010, but wanted to share it with those of you who are interested in writing.

I may write books for a living now, but I was never a child prodigy when it comes to writing! My first book was “published” in second grade by my classroom library and was called (I’m embarrassed to admit), The Girl Who Pooped in Her Pants! Here’s a picture of the cover below. As you can see, I wasn’t a very good illustrator either and, unfortunately, that has never changed!

I’m pleased to say that The Girl Who Pooped in Her Pants was the most popular book in the library that spring (I still have the library card with all of the names on it) … probably because the subject of bodily functions is always hilarious to kids in early elementary school -- as my twin boys prove to me on a daily basis.

So, for your reading enjoyment, here is the text of my first book!

Once there was a girl and she pooped in her pants.

And her mother got mad at her.

And she was 7 and she knew she wasn’t sposed to poop in her pants.

So her mom changed her pants.

And she sent her to her room.

Just then she came out of her room.

And said, “Mother, I pooped in my pants again.”

So her mother changed her pants, spanked her and sent her to her room again.

The End.

Yes, my twins are very proud of their mom for writing this book! I, on the other hand, will go crawl under my rock now…

Why I Rarely Purchase Self-Published Books

Self-publishing has been a boon for those budding authors who have had a hard time claiming the few spots open to authors at traditional publishing houses. Many writers can now realize their dream of holding a book with their name in their hands, something that may never have been possible ten years ago. But I have to admit that I’m still a “book snob.” I’m much more likely to purchase a book from a traditional publishing house because they offer writers something they can’t do themselves: quality. A lot of self-published books have come across my desk for review, and I’ve seen the following problems occur again and again.

Poor writing. You may have an exciting story in your head, but that doesn’t mean you know how to get it down on paper in an interesting way. Join a critique group or have other people read your story and give you honest and constructive feedback. Ask them what parts put them to sleep. Could they relate to your characters? Did they behave and speak like real-life people do? Don’t ask your mom. She’ll love anything you write, no matter how bad. Develop a tough skin and be willing to do re-writes. Not all opinions are valid, but be willing to ask yourself if they might have merit.

Poor grammar and spelling. I can’t emphasize this enough: Every writer should hire the services of an experienced copyeditor. It’s worth the expense. Hire one who specializes in your genre, or at least in fiction vs. nonfiction editing. Have her tighten up your writing and look for inconsistencies, poor sentence structure, and plot holes. She will correct poor grammar and, of course, spelling errors. Even if you’re an English major, you’ve probably read your manuscript so many times that you’re no longer seeing the mistakes. A fresh, professional eye is essential.

Ugly or boring cover. The first thing people usually see when they look at a book is the cover. How many times have you scanned a shelf at the bookstore and picked up a book with a cover that caught your eye? It happens all the time. Do your research. Check out the books on the bestseller list. Very few of them have a boring cover (or title, for that matter). Which ones do you like? Go to the bookstore and look at books in your genre. What do they look like? If you’re not a graphic artist, hire one.

Incomplete back cover description. After checking out the cover, potential buyers turn over the book and read the back cover because that’s usually where the book is described. (If it’s a hardcover book, it may be inside the jacket flaps.) Needless to say, after reading your back cover, you want it to incite people to purchase it. Does the book sound different from other books out there? Does the plot seem riveting? If it’s a nonfiction book, does it tell the reader what your book will do for them? I get frustrated when books only feature glowing quotes on the back cover. I want to know what the story is about or how the writer’s words will help me. Your front cover got your potential reader to pick up the book. The back cover will close the sale if it’s done well.

Flawed inside design. I’ve seen text that wasn’t fully justified, misnumbered pages, incorrectly formatted running heads (or footers), inconsistent chapter title styles, and so much more. Get a copy of The Chicago Manual of Style and learn about formatting a book before you send it into the publisher. Look at books from traditional publishers and study how they’re laid out. Then, when you receive a proof from the publisher, have someone look at it who knows how to format a book. Don’t assume the publisher knows what they’re doing or checked the layout after it was typeset. Have several people help you look for mistakes. At traditional publishing houses, they have many professional editors look at a new book, and mistakes still slide through. If they can’t catch them, you won’t either. But mistakes are more likely to be caught when more people look through the manuscript.

Don’t look like an amateur if you’re self-publishing your book. Make sure that every part of your book looks and reads like it’s been professionally produced. Offer a high-quality product, and your readers will be begging you for your next book!

It wasn’t long before the few ships turned into hundreds of ships closing in on them from every direction. They were trapped; even with the ship’s speed, they couldn’t break through the other ships. There were just too many. The men on board looked to their Captain, wondering what they should do, and how they were going to get out of this one. They had been in many traps since the day that they lost everything, but never were they so hopelessly outnumbered.

Will smiled and spoke. “What are you waiting for? Drop the sails and bring us to a stop. If they want a fight, we will give them one. Now get to it, men!” His smile turned into a grin as his men dropped the sails, and the ship began to slow to a stop. Will closed his eyes and spoke loud enough so only he could hear what was said, “Bother, I hope you Nannies really do more than just keep us looking young like you said.” Then with a yell, he went on, “Nannies, full activation, perfect aim, imprint now!” His voice echoed through the ship as his muscles tightened and his hands clenched into a fist. He could feel the Nannies flowing through his body, making him stronger. He opened his eyes. They were glowing a bright sliver color as if the sun was blurring behind them.

It worked. He could see everything around him, but that wasn’t all. His enemies were glowing green with circles around them, and his crewmembers were red without circles. “Perfect.” His hands dropped to his sides. He grabbed both of his Slashers, one from each side, and he pulled them from their holsters. His hands came up and pointed straight at the enemy ships, as his crew looked on. “There is no way he could even see any of the crew of the other ships. They are too far out,” said the crewmember standing next to him, but Will stayed frozen. A few minutes passed with his guns both aimed at the far-off ships. Though confused as to why their captain was aiming for the enemies while they were out of range, they wasted no time in getting ready for the battle. They grabbed their guns, making sure they were all loaded. They strapped down the sails and lowered the mast. They rolled the cannons into possession, loading every one and having them ready to fire at a moment’s notice.

The ship had been transformed from a high-speed ship to a deadly battleship ready to fight a war. There were hundreds of cannons pushing out from every side of the ship on all three decks. The sail and mast were dropped to make room for the biggest of the cannons, four huge fifty-foot cannons -- two facing straightforward and two facing straight back. The cannons’ backs pushed against each other, holding themselves in place. The huge cannons locked into place, and the crew loaded them. Their operators sat in place and took aim dead center of the enemy ships. They were ready to fight a war, and they weren’t planning on losing.

Will suddenly moved both his guns straight to the head of the crewmember who had spoken earlier and said, “You know, I should shoot you dead for setting us up like this. I won’t kill you, but you will be getting off my ship now.”

“What are you talking about, Captain?” the crewmember asked while shaking. “Don’t play dumb with me; you were the only person on this ship who wasn’t uneasy or surprised by all of this, that and you’re green.”

Author Interview and Giveaway: Nephilim the Remnants, by David A. Henderson

When did you start writing? – I first started writing Nephilim the Remnants in my spare time about ten years ago. I originally wrote the story as a movie script and upon feedback was encouraged to write it as a book. Several years later, I was laid off from my job of 15 years. My wife and I prayed about our desperate situation and felt that God was calling me to finish the book. So I began working on the book full-time. In fact, during this time we had two of our three boys, and my wife was laid off from her job as well. But through all this, God has been faithful in providing all our needs, and we were able to get Nephilim the Remnants published earlier this spring 2012.

What is your book about? – If you like medieval fantasy, you will absolutely love my new book, Nephilim the Remnants. It is Christian fiction, a story of faith, betrayal, and sacrifice set in medieval times where the main characters are the descendants of the mighty Nephilim from biblical times -- supernatural beings believed to be half man and half fallen angel.

How did you come up with the idea for Nephilim the Remnants? – The Bible is where I first came across these beings known as the Nephilim. In Genesis 6:4, it says, “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days -- and also afterwards -- when the sons of God went to the women of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.” The Nephilim are mentioned only a few times in the Bible but seem to have such an underlying presence. They seem to be linked to one of the reasons for the earth-wide flood in Genesis.

Is this your first book? If not, what else have you written? – Yes, Nephilim the Remnants is the first book I have written, and I am happy to report it has been receiving 5 star reviews. I am also currently working on my next book in the series.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers? – Prayer and perseverance, prayer and perseverance, and then more prayer and perseverance. It takes a whole lot of prayer and perseverance.

Why did you choose to write a book in this genre? – I grew up with the fantasy fiction genre; it has always been my personal favorite. It’s the creativity and imagination that I love so much. However, most of the great stories that I have come to love in the fantasy genre have always seemed to be missing something -- true faith. So I wanted to bring fantasy and faith together to create a great story that did not sacrifice the imagination of fantasy or the truth of Christ’s salvation. And that is what Nephilim the Remnants is all about.

What makes your book different? Nephilim the Remnants is truly a unique book in that I not only wrote the story, I also designed the book’s cover and illustrated the drawings that are displayed throughout the book’s pages. In the pages of Nephilim the Remnants, you will experience the whole scope of my vision for the story as the pictures come together to portray the ancient lands and their vivid characters.

Can you tell us about your upcoming book? – I am in the early stages of working on my next book. It will be a prequel about a legendary Nephilim dragon slayer who fights to put an end to the first dark ages.

Do you have a website? How can we order this book? – Yes, you can visit the site at www.NephilimTheRemnants.com. You can order the book from my site with Author Signature, as well as find links to all the places selling Nephilim the Remnants: BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com. The book is also available as an ebook for Kindle and Nook at BarnesandNoble.com and Amazon.com. To purchase a PDF e-book for only $4.99, which can be read on Kindle, Amazon, and iPads, click here.

Announcing the Books to Movies Giveaway Hop
September 11th to 17th
Hosted by

This hop features books that have been made into movies or TV shows or, in my case, movies that have been made into books! For my giveaway, I am offering fantastic comic books from KiZoic (a division of Ape Entertainment) featuring characters from the hilarious children’s movies, Kung Fu Panda and Penguins of Madagascar!

I’ve been having a difficult time motivating my eight-year-old boys to read, and I’ve found that comic books are a great way to do that. They love to look at the colorful pictures with the stories, and a comic book is not as intimidating to read as a text-heavy book. They also love that these books include characters from some of their favorite movies. They’ve really enjoyed these new adventures.

For this giveaway, one lucky winner will receive…

Kung Fu Panda #6
Mountain warlords. Cutthroat barbarians. Ancient demons. Po has faced them all. His next challenge, however, may be more than even the Dragon Warrior can handle, when Master Shifu issues Po a new challenge … a 24-hour fast! Will Po be able to defeat the enemy within … his own voracious appetite?

Penguins of Madagascar #4
After abandoning ship and swimming the remainder of the way to Australia, Skipper and his recruits learn that a human-built irrigation system has placed Mia’s platypus eggs in danger, prompting them to attempt to dismantle the elaborate contraption, but will Operation: Irrigation Confrontation be enough to keep the un-hatchlings safe?

One lucky winner will receive both of the comic books featured above courtesy of KiZoic! To enter, simply fill out the easy Rafflecopter form below. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only and will end on September 17, 2012 at 11:59 PM ET. Passion Creek Book Tour: Enter to Win a HUGE Prize Pack, Including a $100 Amazon Gift Card!

Passion Creek by Avery Flynn
Uptight history professor Sam Layton may have the abs of a movie action hero, but he stopped believing in the joy of adventure a long time ago. However, when a one-night stand with a tattooed bombshell leads to a treasure map for the long-buried Rebecca’s Bounty, the call to action is too strong to ignore.

All Las Vegas cocktail waitress Josie Winarsky wants to do is paint. But when she lands smack dab in the middle of a mob plot, she has to push aside her dreams to find a treasure in Dry Creek, Nebraska and save her family from harm. With Sam at her side and a Vegas loan shark on her tail, the treasure she finds turns out to be much more valuable than emeralds and rubies.

This book is intended for Adults 18+

Temptation Creek & Seduction Creek and Passion Creek

Avery Flynn is a pseudonym for the author who, at least for now, prefers to remain behind the scenes. She believes having Avery as her alter ego is a very good thing because, as she says, “Pen name Avery is way cooler than me. Her favorite color is hot pink. She drinks single malt scotch on the rocks. She loves the Argentinean tango and stays at Iceland’s Ice Hotel.”

Author Avery has been writing since she was a child and her father gave her a baby blue Brother typewriter. She couldn’t read but nonetheless wrote numerous stories about her stuffed animals in gibberish. She hasn’t stopped since, though she maintains that her spelling has gotten much better and she now prefers to write in English.

Today she’s enjoying her own happily ever after with her dashing husband, three crazy kids and two arthritic dogs. She dreams of one day having a floor-to-ceiling library à la Beauty and the Beast and is working to perfect the coffee IV drip.
