What is stripped down running about?
The book, stripped down running, written by a therapist, is a psychological novel that highlights the impact parents have, and the wild ride that can occur when adults try to outrun strong negative experiences from their childhood.

As a young adult, the heroine Hannah Friesen tries distancing herself from her past, not understanding why she is compelled to do things that hurt her. Those close to her find her amusing and endearing, yet long for her to overcome the darkness they see in her eyes.

This novel narrates how love can be enmeshed with pain in families, the great power these two have to shape our adult lives, and how we can be empowered to do something about this.

How did you get the idea for this book?
I got the idea for this book initially from frustration -- I was getting angry with all the “happy endings” most books had. I felt there was a lack of authenticity in popular books and wanted to create a story that demonstrates real resilience.

This book is fiction, but is there a lesson or message you hope readers will learn by reading this book?
Yes, this book is commercial fiction, but I do have two messages I hope readers might learn from reading it. The first is that we can’t underestimate the strong negative influence parents have when they are hard on their children. Our parents’ generation often did what was socially appropriate at the time, which was punishment to “teach” respect and obedience. We need to be able to say that this is not okay anymore and it hurts kids. Also, there needs to be an understanding that this harm has happened, but we still love our parents, knowing most didn’t use this discipline style intentionally.

The second message I hope readers absorb is that it is possible to heal from harsh experiences and really turn our lives around. With the support and encouragement of others, we can find the courage and stamina to do so.

Is this your first book? If not, what else have you written?
This is my first fictional novel. Since starting this book, I have also written a short parenting eBook called, Connect with Your Heart, Connect with Your Child.

When did you start writing? Do you have any advice for beginning writers?
I began writing stripped down running seven years ago. My advice for beginning writers is to read a lot, try to get involved in a writing group, and start off with a writing workshop in their favoured genre. I would also try to connect with your favourite authors through social media.

Do you plan a sequel or future books?
I am planning to write more books! Right now I am taking time to decide if that is a sequel to this one or a memoir.

Do you have a website? How can we order this book?
My book, stripped down running, is available through all the usual on-line outlets: Amazon, Chapters (in Canada), Barnes & Noble, and also for the iPad. The links to all those vendors are on my website at
