Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: Write Like Richard Peck

This is the first week that I’m participating in the Literary Addicts Weekly Meme! Every Wednesday, they suggest a fun theme to write about. The theme of this week is favorite book quotes.

I’ve written before on quotes that have inspired me as a writer. But this week I wanted to expand on this particular quote by award-winning author Richard Peck:

He wasn’t a morning kind of guy, even with a full night’s sleep. He had a problem with that quick shift from dreams to the truth.
―Richard Peck, Past Perfect, Present Tense, 2004 (“The Kiss in the Carry-on Bag”)

I think this is an example of brilliant writing because it says so much more than “he struggled to get up in the morning.” When I read the second line -- “He had a problem with that quick shift from dreams to the truth” -- I realized that Peck had explained perfectly why I’m not a morning person! I’m not lazy or grouchy or need to get more rest. No, I just have a hard time moving from the fantasy world of my dreams to the harsh reality of life.

As a writer, this line makes me realize that even a simple concept like telling your readers that someone isn’t a morning person can be explained poetically. The next time you’re writing, and you put down something like “He liked to cook” or “She was fond of walking,” ask yourself, “How can I describe this like Richard Peck?”

Now, hop around to read other bloggers’ favorite book quotes!

In the year 2050, a secret government study nicknamed Operation Source Code injects eight volunteers with a retrovirus. The goal? To abate the energy crisis by reprogramming human DNA to power personal electronic devices. The experiment works but with disastrous consequences.

Growing up in the isolated community of Hemlock Hollow, life hasn’t changed much since 1698 when her Amish ancestors came to America. She milks her cow by hand, makes fresh bread every morning, and hopes to be courted by Jeremiah, the boy who’s been her best friend since she could walk.

But when Lydia’s father has a stroke and is taken to the outside world for medical treatment, Lydia and Jeremiah leave Hemlock Hollow. “I am seriously impressed with how the author took the simplistic Amish life and combined it with a futuristic, almost dystopian story line as seamlessly as she did. I highly recommend it.” Crafty Cauldron

“I am also a sucker for Amish stories, and love the idea of the new paranormal/supernatural/dystopian twists using them. This book is electric. You are pulled into Lydia’s story and keep on reading, trying to find out what happens next. I tried to figure out what I would do if I were in her situation. I am impressed by the strength she is able to find within herself.” Andi’s Young Adult blog

“I never know what to think when I start reading a book by a new author. But this one was electrifying!!! This book had me on the edge of my seat all the way to the last page.” Taking Time for Mommy

“It begins with the perfect bang, and lights up your mind in ways you may not have thought. As much as it is dystopian it is speculative, and I am all for challenging the minds of the human race.” Literary Sweet

“The characters were so well written that I felt like I knew them. Lydia stayed true to who she was and her personality even when she had to make decisions that were not at all what an Amish would have ever imagine anyone would have to make.” Delphina Reads too Much

Book Review: Starting Now, by Debbie Macomber

If you’re a fan of #1 New York Times bestselling author, Debbie Macomber, you’ll be thrilled to know that she has a new book arriving in early April called Starting Now. This is the story of Libby, a high-powered attorney who’s certain she’s soon to be made a partner in the firm where she works. Needless to say, she’s absolutely shocked when she is given her pink slip. Suddenly, this career woman who spent every moment of her life at work has nothing to do except search for a new job. After the initial shock is over, Libby begins to realize that there’s more pleasure in life when she’s not climbing the corporate ladder. She makes new friends, joins a gym, volunteers at the hospital, mentors a troubled teenage girl, meets a handsome doctor, and even takes up knitting again! But just as she is deciding this is the life she wants, her former firm makes her an offer she can’t refuse…

I won’t tell you what Libby decides (although you may be surprised to find it’s not quite what you expected), but I loved seeing Libby’s journey as she learns to redefine the meaning of “success” and overcome the wounds of her past that led to many of her life choices. Libby -- and all of the characters in Starting Now, for that matter -- are imperfect people, just like all of us. They make mistakes, hurt each other, and have “issues” from the past that hold them back from happiness. And I liked how Libby found that she really needed to have other people in her life. You’ll love getting to know Libby in Starting Now. I highly encourage you to pre-order a copy of Starting Now, by Debbie Macomber! Meet up with the author on her website and Facebook.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book to facilitate my review, but all opinions are 100% my own. This post contains my Amazon affiliate link.

Quirky, artistic and snarky Mattie Lowe does not lead a charmed life. Her mother is constantly belittling her on Skype. Mercedes, the school mean girl, has made it her personal mission to torment Mattie. But worst of all? Her stepsister Ella is the most beautiful, popular girl in school and is dating Mattie’s secret longtime crush, Jake Kingston.

Tired of being left out and done with waiting for her own stupid fairy godmother to show up, Mattie decides to change her life. She’ll start by running for senior class president against wildly popular Jake.

Ella can keep her Prince Annoying. Mattie’s going to rule the school.

And no one, not even a cute and suddenly flirty Jake, is going to stop her.

“My top pick of 2012 YA… This book is just. plain. fun.”
~Jordan McCollum, author of Saints & Spies and I, Spy

“Sariah Wilson's new book, The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back, is hilarious… What follows is a story of fun and romance with some good non-preachy life lessons thrown in. The voice in the main character, Mattie, makes the whole thing. I thought it was definitely a book I’d recommend to anyone with teenagers or who just want to read a good teen romance.”
~Julie Coulter Bellon, author of All Fall Down and All’s Fair

“Sariah [Wilson] has written one of the funniest stories I’ve read in such a long, long time. I literally couldn’t put it down. Yes, my poor Kindle’s battery died and I was attached to a short power cord, contorted in a very uncomfortable position while I read to the end…. Sariah Wilson captured the back-biting, insecure, hormone-driven, clique-riddled high school atmosphere so perfectly you’d think she never grew up. I dare you not to laugh as you read this witty and oh, so, romantic story.”
~Debra Erfert of Windows into Writing

“Sariah Wilson writes like the best of/most popular YA teen fiction/teen romance authors: Sarah Dessen, Jennifer Echols, Susanne Collins, Cassandra Clare. She sucks you in and never lets you go. I finished the novel in one night because I just couldn’t go to sleep without knowing the ending! I hope that Sariah comes out with more novels. I know I’ll be re-reading this one all the time! She’s extremely talented and needs to be talked about. I highly recommend The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back to anyone (over the age of 12) who wants a YA novel that’s a real modern-day fairy tale.”
~Hilary at Novel d’Tales

“This was such an entertaining story! I shouldn’t have started reading it so late in the evening, because I didn’t want to put it down to go to sleep… This is a book I can see myself reading several times. It’s a fast, clean read with great characters, and I highly recommend it.”
~Andrea of Literary Time Out

"The book is wonderful. It’s quirky and fun. The story makes you laugh and you fall in love with the characters right from the beginning… This is a well-written book. It is one that will make you smile and sigh as you remember your first love. And it has a moral … be yourself, believe in yourself and maybe, just maybe, your fairytale will come true. Pick up this book.”
~Ana of The Book Hookup

Author Sariah Wilson

Sariah Wilson has never jumped out of an airplane, never climbed Mt. Everest, and is not a former CIA operative. She has, however, been madly, passionately in love with her soulmate and is a fervent believer in happily ever afters -- which is why she writes romance. The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back is her fourth happily ever after novel. She grew up in southern California, graduated from Brigham Young University (go Cougars!) with a semi-useless degree in history, and is the oldest of nine (yes, nine) children. She currently lives with the aforementioned soulmate and their four children in Utah, along with three tiger barb fish, a cat named Tiger, and a recently departed hamster that is buried in the backyard (and has nothing at all to do with tigers).

The Third Book in The Orphan Trilogy Has Been Published!

Back in November, I told you about an exciting thriller by James and Lance Morcan -- The Ninth Orphan. (CLICK HERE to see my review.) So, I was pleased to hear that The Orphan Uprising, the third book in The Orphan Trilogy, has just been released as a Kindle eBook on Amazon, courtesy of Sterling Gate Books.

About this book:
In this explosive conclusion to The Orphan Trilogy, the ninth-born orphan’s dramatic story resumes five years after book one, The Ninth Orphan, ends.

Having eluded his former masters at the Omega Agency and escaped his past life as an operative, Nine has married his soul mate, Isabelle. They’ve carved out a new life for themselves, off the grid, in the remote islands of French Polynesia.

The contented couple has a five-year-old son, Francis, who is a chip off the old block and who has inherited his father’s unique DNA. Francis will soon have a sister as Isabelle is about to give birth to a baby girl.

Their idyllic lifestyle is shattered when Francis is abducted by operatives in the employ of the Omega Agency, the shadowy organization that brought Nine into the world and once controlled every aspect of his life. The terrified boy with the unique DNA is dispatched to one of Omega’s underground medical laboratories for scientific testing and experimentation.

Nine is desperate to find Francis before Omega can harm him. He soon finds he’s up against his fellow orphans -- all elite operatives as he once was -- who are under orders to kill him on sight. To overcome them, he must call on all his former training and skills. His search takes him around the world -- from Tahiti to America, Germany, Greenland and the Congo.

To add to Nine’s worries, he has a serious heart condition that requires immediate surgery. The clock is ticking and he knows he’s on borrowed time. It’s a race against the clock to find his son before Omega can harm the boy -- and before his heart gives out.

Written by father-and-son writing team Lance and James Morcan (authors of The Ninth Orphan, The Orphan Factory and Fiji: A Novel), The Orphan Uprising is the third book in The Orphan Trilogy. A feature film adaptation of The Ninth Orphan is currently being developed.

An Excerpt from "The Chronicles of Trellah, Book One: The Perpetual Rain"!

Susan Heim on Writing is pleased to be a stop on the book tour for The Chronicles of Trellah, Book One: The Perpetual Rain, by T.S. Graham. I hope you enjoy the following excerpt!

About this book: Fourteen-year-old Sophina Murray will be the first to tell you: Bad luck comes in threes. First, her father is lost at sea. Then, the rains start. And don’t stop. And finally, her little brother is taken from his bed by a monster straight from her worst nightmare. A glimpse into the parallel universe of Trellah -- a land of giant trees, bizarre creatures, and a glowing red mineral with mystical properties -- convinces Sophina that all may not be lost. But first, she’ll have to survive in a hostile world where her darkest fears live and breathe.

An excerpt from The Chronicles of Trellah, Book One: The Perpetual Rain:

The wind flattened Sophina’s raincoat against her body as she stepped outside. Her mom was right; the storm was getting worse.

When the clouds had first rolled over Thomasville, they hadn’t shed so much as a sprinkle. The initial formations were striking, and each evening a growing number of townsfolk had gathered on the common to watch them reflect the red and orange hues of the sunset. But the clouds had thickened as the days passed, soon melding together to block out the last of the sun’s warming rays.

And that’s when the rain started.

So far, the anomaly had proved to be nothing more than a nuisance to the locals and a curiosity to everyone else. But Sophina feared that could soon change. This wind meant business, and it was only getting stronger.

Sophina stepped off the cobblestone walkway and turned right onto the brick sidewalk. This was usually the spot where she put her head down and left their old sea captain’s home at 4 Dirigo Drive behind, not looking up again until she’d arrived at the edge of Greystone Harbor. But today a strange sensation gave her pause. Somehow, she knew she was being watched.

About Author T.S. Graham
T.S. Graham was born and raised in mid-coast Maine. He has worked as a sea-urchin diver, fish monger, home renovator, and in several group homes for children and adults with disabilities. His original screenplay, Stone’s Point, written as Clint Elliott, has won multiple awards. He studied English Literature at the University of Southern Maine, where, despite developing a strong dislike of the traditional curriculum focused on old, dead (and boring) scribes, he somehow managed to graduate with honors. His greatest influences are writers like Stephen King and Michael Crichton, whose talents would have allowed them to write more literary fare, but they chose to thrill and entertain instead. He now lives on a horse farm with his beautiful wife and five daughters, two poodles, two cats, two happy turtles, four playful ferrets, three fish, a corn snake named “Tiger,” dozens of chickens, and, of course, four awesome equines. The Chronicles of Trellah, Book One: The Perpetual Rain is his debut novel.
