A Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest Book Blast ~ Giveaway for a Kindle, $20 Amazon Gift Card and eBook!

A Scholar's Journey The Divine Tempest

A Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest

A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest is a no-holds-barred fantasy brawl. It begins when the God of Justice and Retribution opens The Abyss and unleashes a vengeful demon upon the mortal realm of Therra.

Now it is up to scholar Penndarius Greyson and his tormented protector, martial artist Soren Luna Mortalitas, to stop a crisis that would send shockwaves through the very fabric of creation. In addition, Penndarius is waging an internal battle with a disembodied presence attempting to possess his mind. The two heroes must avoid death or capture, but there is a catch: They have only one day to solve a riddle older than history before a dark host of unstoppable demons is released into the world.

The Divine Tempest includes warring factions, betrayal and redemption, and of course, Herrick Erickson-Brigl's trademark: epic fight scenes. This is the lean, hard-hitting first installment in a series that follows Penndarius’s growth as the avatar of the God of Creation and Soren’s reclamation of his lethal family’s humanity.

Purchase A Scholar's Journey: The Divine Tempest on Amazon.

Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: Favorite Book Covers

It’s Wednesday! And that means it’s time for the Literary Addicts Weekly Meme! Every Wednesday, they suggest a fun theme to write about. The theme of this week is “favorite book covers.” It can be one coming out soon or an old favorite!

I can’t say that any one cover really stands out for me. I do know what I DON’T like: covers with real people on them (unless it’s a memoir or biography, of course). I just hate those romance novel covers that have photos of bulked up men on them. They look so cheesy! I’d rather imagine my own hero, thank you very much.

I think I’m most attracted to covers that tend to appear on historical fiction novels. I looked up some recent sellers on Amazon and came up with these covers that I like:

As you can see, I’m most attracted to covers that are mostly scenery because they set a mood or tone for the book. They make me feel like the novel is going to transport me to the place shown on the cover, and often this place looks very mysterious and interesting.

What kind of book covers do you like?

Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: Autographed Books

It’s Wednesday! And that means it’s time for the Literary Addicts Weekly Meme! Every Wednesday, they suggest a fun theme to write about. The theme of this week is: If you were able to get 5 author autographs, who would they be and why?

This is such a tough question to answer because I’m just not an autograph enthusiast! I attended a writers’ conference a few years ago, bought some books by a couple of the authors/speakers and had them signed, but now they just sit on my bookshelf, taking up space. I only get excited about an autographed book if it is a really old book, and I know that the autograph makes it valuable.

I love to browse used bookstores (which are getting rarer and rarer) to see the old books they have for sale. I rarely buy them because they tend to be expensive and I have no clue if I’m paying a reasonable price for them, but it would be thrilling to see an authentic signature from a famous novelist like Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, etc. I’d be tempted to purchase one if I knew it had some value. But I just don’t have any interest in collecting signatures from modern authors. Perhaps I’ll be sorry later for my lack of foresight if one of them becomes wildly famous, but I’ll take my chances…

Ixeos Book Blast: Giveaway for a $50 Amazon Gift Card or PayPal Cash!

The McClellands are enjoying a lazy summer vacation at the beach when they are lured from our world into Ixeos, an alternate Earth. Finding themselves lost in a maze of tunnels under Paris and surrounded by strangers, they discover that they have been brought to Ixeos for one purpose: to take the planet back from humanoid aliens who have claimed it. With the aid of the tunnels and a mysterious man named Landon, the teens travel the world seeking the key that will allow them to free Darian, the long-imprisoned rebel leader. But the aliens aren’t the only problem on Ixeos -- the McClellands have to deal with brutal gangs, desperate junkies, and a world without power, where all the technology is owned by the aliens, and where most of the population has been killed or enslaved. The worst part? There’s no way home.

Aura Blog Tour: Excerpt and Giveaway for a $25 Amazon Gift Card or PayPal Cash

Tour Schedule

Susan Heim on Writing is pleased to be a stop on the blog tour for Aura, by Rebecca Lynn Talley! Learn more about this exciting book below and read the excerpt. Then enter to win a $25 Amazon gift card (or PayPal cash) in the Rafflecopter form. Enjoy!

Aura, by Rebecca Lynn Talley

“I half-turned to her and shrugged, still processing what I’d seen, or at least what I thought I’d seen, in Ms. Neal’s eyes -- like they weren’t hers. Obviously, they were her eyes, but it looked like she’d plucked them from someone else’s head. A dead someone else’s head.”

In the fight between good and evil, Light is your only weapon.

Crystal Scott finally feels like a normal teenager. She has a lead in the high school play, a best friend, and a gorgeous boyfriend. With prom only a few days away, Crystal’s ordinary life seems perfect.

Endowed with great Light because of her virtuous choices and her inherent gifts, Crystal’s aura has become visible to those with the ability to see auras. Unfortunately, her power has also attracted the attention of demons intent on destroying all Light.

When Vincent Crandall, the human host for a powerful demon, discovers that Crystal’s Light is strong enough to disrupt the connection between demons and their hosts, he realizes she may be able to sever the connection altogether. Determined to stop her from interfering with his plans to rule the world, he sends operatives to neutralize her Light.

After the operatives fail to disable Crystal, Vincent decides he must harness her power for himself. He kidnaps her parents, and Crystal is thrust into battle against a demon army she didn’t even know existed. With the help of a mysterious young man and his mother, Crystal must learn to use the power within her before Vincent kills her parents and exploits her Light.

An Excerpt from Aura, by Rebecca Lynn Talley:

A strange sensation crawled up my back and settled at the base of my neck. My skin pricked and sent tiny impulses through my scalp. I tried to shake it off, but I couldn’t. I figured I needed to stand up and move around.

I stood too fast and the room started to tilt, so I moved toward an open window. The air felt heavy against my chest, as if I were hiking through deep water. I’d never experienced such a bizarre sensation. I gazed out the window.

Under a large evergreen tree, not far from the classroom, stood a tall guy who looked like he was in his twenties. He had black hair, and his gaze was locked on me. I felt someone come up behind me so I spun around and faced Ms. Neal. When my eyes met hers, fear blasted through my veins. I took a few steps back.

“Are you lost, Miss Scott?” she asked in an ice-filled tone, a facial tic flashing across her right cheek.

“Um, no.” I swallowed hard. Her eyes again. They were flat and glassy, like she was in a coma or something. And, even though the lights were on, there was a shadow across her face. I rushed back to my desk and plopped down. Definitely not my imagination.

"This YA urban fantasy is fantastic! The story grabbed me from the start and kept me enthralled until the end! I love books that keep me thinking about the characters and events and possibilities even after putting them down... Aura is one of those books! Rebecca Lynn Talley has created characters you care about in a world begging for the special gifts they possess. I love the premise of Aura and imagine I'll be enjoying many more Light vs. Demon novels in the future ... at least I hope there are more to come!"

"I loved the clasic good vs evil in Aura. I loved that Crystal made the conscious choice to be good inspite of feelings and doubts. I also loved the idea of demons posessing somone who had made dark choices, or greedy bargains. The book is clean and well handled in spite of the serious subject matter. Well done."
~C. Michelle Jefferies

"This is one of those books that you hope will become widespread enough to make a positive impact in this world. Personally, I think this is a book every teenager should read and I will definitely be passing it along to my own kids. Thank you, Rebecca, for writing a beautiful story with a wonderful message! I hope you keep at it because now I want a sequel!"
~Rachael Anderson

"Aura sucked me in from the first page. The book is intense and well-written. I loved that Crystal is innocent and makes a conscious choice to stay that way in the face of intense pressure. I would recommend Aura to young adults on up."
~Cami Checketts

Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: My Favorite Genres

It’s Wednesday! And that means it’s time for the Literary Addicts Weekly Meme! Every Wednesday, they suggest a fun theme to write about. The theme of this week is: What is your first choice of genre when you are browsing for books? Romance? History? Paranormal?

Actually, I have two favorite literary genres. If you had asked me this question several years ago, I would have said, hands down, it’s historical fiction. My addiction to it began in high school when I got hooked on the wonderful series of books by Victoria Holt (which was actually a pen name for Eleanor Hibbert). The very first book I remember reading by Victoria Holt was called Mistress of Mellyn. After that, I read every single one of her books several times. I even read many of the books she wrote under the pen names Philippa Carr and Jean Plaidy. By the time of her death in 1993 at the age of 86, she had sold more than 100 million copies of her books! (You can see an extensive list of her novels and pen names HERE.)

Another historical fiction writer I loved was Madeleine Brent, whom I found out later was actually Peter O’Donnell! He/she wrote some wonderful books, such as Tregaron's Daughter, Moonraker’s Bride, and Merlin’s Keep. (Click HERE to find a list of his books.) Eleanor Hibbert and Peter O’Donnell are both deceased now, so there will no longer be new books from them. But if you’re a fan of historical fiction, I highly recommend their books.

These days, I still love historical fiction, but I’ve also gotten hooked on paranormal and fantasy books. I’ll admit that it all started with Twilight. I thought the book sounded stupid, with vampires and werewolves, but my friend convinced me to read it. “You’re a writer,” she said. “At least read it from a business standpoint to try to understand why this book has become such a big hit.” So, I grudgingly read Twilight, and I loved it! I tore through the other three books and the movies. And that got me started on that genre. Books I’ve absolutely loved recently in this genre include:

A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night
by Deborah Harkness

by Rachel Hartman

Beautiful Creatures
by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

(I’m almost done reading Beautiful Creatures now and can’t wait to read the other three books in the series.)

I have two bookshelves filled with historical fiction and paranormal/fantasy books to read. I can’t get enough of them! Now hop around to the other blogs participating in this hop to find out what genres they love to read!
