Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: My Favorite Beach Read

It’s Wednesday! And that means it’s time for the Literary Addicts Weekly Meme! Every Wednesday, they suggest a fun theme to write about. The theme of this week: “What is the best ‘beach’ read you have ever read?

One book immediately came to mind when I heard the word “beach.” It was The Heart Mender: A Story of Second Chances, by Andy Andrews.

Imagine that you are a newlywed, deeply in love with your husband. It is wartime, and your husband is a military pilot. He heads over to Europe soon after your wedding to train Allied pilots, where he is shot down and killed by enemy fire. Somehow, you manage to struggle on, but you are filled with rage and hatred for those who killed your husband. One day, you are walking on the beach, and you find a man facedown in the sand by the shore. You lean down to see if he’s alive and find a bullet wound in his shoulder. Slowly, you manage to roll him over onto his back … and recoil in horror. He is wearing the uniform of the enemy, the same country that is responsible for your beloved husband’s death. What do you do? Leave him on the beach where he’ll probably bleed to death? Finish him off yourself? Call the authorities to deal with him? Or take him home, in spite of your hatred for him, and nurse him back to health? I loved this story based on true events, and I hope that you’ll pick up a copy for your next beach read!

Concealed in the Shadows: "The Fear of Sharing Writing" (Author Guest Post) and a Giveaway!

Concealed in the Shadows
by Gabrielle Arrowsmith
(YA Dystopian)
Published by Clean Teen Publishing
Release Date: May 17, 2013

Sydney Harter has long awaited September 12th, 2033 -- her eighteenth birthday. She can finally apply for guardianship of her sister, who is her only family and entire world. She hopes they will be lawfully reunited, but is prepared to defy authority and risk everything to escape the captivity of Miles County so that they can be together.

Escaping will be difficult and dangerous. Citizens are bound to their county by sophisticated chip implants that deliver shocks to those who dare to cross the electric barrier. Sydney is very clever, but her trickery is limited against the all-seeing eyes of technology. Even if they were to survive the escape, disappearing into the forgotten forests and towns of the past seems an impossible task.

What Sydney doesn’t know is that she is the particular interest of two opposing forces. With deceit, fear, and warfare surrounding her -- can she trust the party that aims to help with her fight against the other? Can she open her heart to receive and return unexpected love? When her sister’s life becomes jeopardized, Sydney will have to weigh a new love against the only enduring love she has known. The cost could be deadly…

How will she choose?

GABRIELLE ARROWSMITH enjoyed writing her debut novel, Concealed in the Shadows, during a lovely Minnesota summer that she had off from her primary profession, teaching. Acting, playing and coaching soccer, reading, playing piano, and spending time with family and friends are among her other interests.

The Fear of Sharing Writing
By Gabrielle Arrowsmith

Writing is precise and creative, two pathways ever at odds, perpetually fighting for the last word. When and how one defeats the other is what we call an author’s voice.

The product of a process so intimate and deliberate is bound to be personal. That, coupled with the prevalence of the fears of failure and rejection, has misled one too many talented storytellers to hide away their unique creations.

My fears of failure and rejection have overwhelmed me many times in my life, so much so that I’ve withheld my best or given up so as to protect my handiwork from judgment.

Recently, I realized it is a far greater transgression to allow my character to be judged and deemed weak and afraid. So I lifted my chin and continued to write.

My computer housed my growing story during the days and throughout many nights. My memory fought to store the idea overload until my fingers were rested enough to interlace them into the plot.

Finally, the end was in sight. A smile erupted from within me, but before it could rise to live on my lips, it was smothered by qualms that overtook my stomach. I had written a magnificent story, one that deserved to be shared.

Ironically, it was the perseverance of one of my own characters that inspired me to face my fears. After all she had been through, I simply couldn’t tuck her away in a file to die.

There are things in this world worthy of my fear; sharing my writing is no longer on the list.

Literary Addicts Weekly Meme: Nonfiction Books That Inspired Me

It’s Wednesday! And that means it’s time for the Literary Addicts Weekly Meme! Every Wednesday, they suggest a fun theme to write about. The theme of this week: “What nonfiction books have influenced or inspired you most?

The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale

I read this book multiple times as a teenager, and it really helped me get through the turbulent teen years when I found myself slipping into depression or feeling sorry for myself. It made me see that we really do have control over our thoughts and how we view our lives. I loved the real-life stories -- so inspirational -- and the practical advice in the book. I think that everyone should read this book, no matter their age.

I’ve read a lot of books about writing, but this one really stuck with me. This is the only Stephen King book I’ve ever read, but I’ve always been fascinated by his success and his ability to create stories that capture people’s imagination. This book is part memoir, part how-to, and I really enjoyed both parts -- Stephen King’s personal story, as well as his advice for writing (no adverbs!). Even if you don’t read or write in King’s genre, this book contains valuable advice and inspiration to keep writing!

Married to Bhutan by Linda Leaming
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

My dream has always been to travel more internationally and perhaps live in a foreign country. There’s just so much to learn, and I love reading about cultures that are different from my own. So, I was really inspired by Married to Bhutan and Eat Pray Love because they’re both written by women who learned more about themselves and what they really value in life from spending time in other countries and being open to new experiences and ways of living and thinking.

What to Expect When You're Expecting by Heidi Murkoff and Sharon Mazel
Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care by Benjamin Spock, M.D.

When I was pregnant and then parenting babies, these two books were my Bibles! I loved following my monthly progress through my pregnancies in What to Expect When You’re Expecting. And I was always looking up any strange symptom I had to be sure that it was “normal.” When my kids were young, I turned to Dr. Spock because that’s what my mother used! My boys were particularly difficult at age 4, and Dr. Spock reassured me that this didn't mean my boys were going to be little terrors forever (and he was right!).

Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen Book Blast: Giveaway for a $50 Amazon Gift Card or PayPal Cash

Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen
Was Mr. Darcy real? Is time travel really possible? For pragmatic Manhattan artist Eliza Knight, the answer to both questions is absolutely, Yes! And Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley Farms, Virginia, is the reason why!

His tale of love and romance in Regency England leaves Eliza in no doubt that Fitz Darcy is the embodiment of Jane Austen’s legendary hero. And she’s falling in love with him. But can the man who loved the inimitable Jane Austen ever love average, ordinary Eliza Knight?

Eliza’s doubts grow, perhaps out of proportion, when things start to happen in the quiet hamlet of Chawton, England; events that could change everything. Will the beloved author become the wedge that divides Fitz and Eliza or the tie that binds them?

Praise for Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen

O’Rourke creates a world that defies cynicism and demands suspension of disbelief -- even in this age of doubt and hyper-realism. Sheer escapism at its best. Clever, charming and affectionate.
~Jocelyn Bury

…the reader must tenaciously read on rather than put the book down to satisfy their hunger for the story to resolve, which it does in characteristically Jane Austen fashion.
~Erin Murdock

In Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen, author Sally Smith O’Rourke creates a compelling story that investigates what and who might have inspired Jane Austen. While the story line is certainly far-fetched, it is a truly unique idea, one that captivated this reader until the very last page.
~Meg Massey

NOTE FROM SUSAN: Click here to read my review of Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen!

Author Sally Smith O'Rourke
Sally Smith O’Rourke is a surgical scrub nurse at the City of Hope national cancer research hospital in Duarte, California, and resides in the nearby Victorian village of Monrovia.

With her late husband, author Michael O’Rourke (aka F.M. O’Rourke), Smith O’Rourke owned and operated a medical advertising company where she used her diverse talents to produce and co-write teaching films and videos, working not only with major medical and surgical manufacturing companies, but also network television. These endeavors ultimately led to a collaboration on two feature films (direct to video) and three published novels.

The wife-and-husband writing team of Sally Smith and Michael O’Rourke, being long-time fans of Jane Austen, wrote The Man Who Loved Jane Austen, released by Kensington Books in 2006. Kensington followed that very successful effort with The Maidenstone Lighthouse in 2007 and Christmas at Sea Pines Cottage in 2009, both also collaborative projects by Smith and O’Rourke. Published after her partner and spouse’s untimely death in 2001, the publisher chose not to use the names Michael O’Rourke and Sally Smith (as the manuscripts were presented), releasing all three books under Sally Smith O’Rourke.

Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen is Sally Smith O’Rourke’s first solo novel.

Through the Valley Love Endures Book Tour: Exclusive Excerpt!

Susan Heim on Writing is pleased to be a stop on the book tour for the book, Through the Valley Love Endures, by Eddie David Santiago.

About this book:
What if death came for you today? Would you be ready? Forced to face his own mortality, Eddie Santiago fought to stay alive in a broken world. His incredible journey through heartbreak, abuse, and adversity left him with one truth: every life makes a difference. This is the true and compelling story of his supernatural quest through the valley of death, doubt, and darkness. Eddie provides a passionate story that will capture the attention of even the toughest skeptics. Angels, demons, heaven, hell, Jesus and the devil: Are they fiction, or are they more real than anything else in the world?

Enjoy this excerpt:

“Hold out your hands,” I told her. “Hold your hands out so I can take them and suffer with you. That is the love of God I can offer you. I know you want more, so if God speaks, then I will reveal to you a God who knows you and loves you.”

With hesitation, Reba held out her hands.

“God, we pray for healing over your daughter’s heart. Reba asks for you to speak her back to life, but it is only through your son Jesus that she may be loved back to life. We are at your mercy,” I said as flashes of her life came to me. Again, things like this didn’t happen all the time, but when they did, I felt compelled to share. “You’re that little girl who would look at the picture of the person she lost when she was very young and ask God to send you a sign. If He had just showed you a butterfly when you had asked, then you would have hope of seeing who you lost. Today is the day you have been given your butterfly by a God who loves you, suffers with you and knows you by name. You don’t need to hide in the darkness any longer.”

With tears rolling down Reba’s face she said, “Why are you different than the other Christians? They say they follow God, but they make fun of me, shut me out. I continue to lose friends. You tell me of a God who loves me and about a butterfly I dreamed of ever since I was a little girl. Why?”

With tears in my eyes I replied, “Because He first loved me before I ever loved Him. I know a lot of people have hurt you, but the God I serve tells me His Kingdom is for all people, especially for people like you and me. He heals the broken.”

Quickly removing her hands from mine, Reba said, “I don’t know what just happened, but I trust you. I don’t know if I can ever follow God, but I’m open to the challenge because of you.”

On Co-Authoring, Guest Post by Authors Rebecca Gober and Courtney Nuckels, Plus a Giveaway!

A Note from Susan: Enjoy this entertaining and informative article about co-authoring from Rebecca Gober and Courtney Nuckels, bestselling co-authors of The Night Marchers Series and The ELE Series. After the article, find out how you can enter to win copies of their books!

Thank you, Susan, for hosting us on your blog. We were excited when you asked us to write about our experience in being co-authors. We've been asked in interviews numerous times what it's like to co-author a book with another author. We realize that this isn't as commonplace as authoring a book by yourself is. We also realize that most times the same co-authors rarely author more than one or two books together. We are a little different...

As you can see from our six books, the two of us only write together. This would seem odd to some people, but for us it works. Many people have asked us when we are going to write on our own, but at this point we don't have any plans to do so. Why fix something that isn't broken? We write well together, and as far as time efficiency, we can write more with two people carrying the workload. This method has worked great for us so far. After all, we've only been writing for a year and a half and have already published six novels. That's equal to one book every three months. Also, a big perk for us is the fact that we are both there to spur each other on, to hold each other accountable and to challenge each other to push our writing further. It's like the buddy system when you choose to start working out. You need that buddy to tell you to get off your booty when you are being lazy and trying to cop excuses.

Now, co-authoring a book isn't for everyone. You have to have a high level of trust to share your creative outlet with another individual. You also have to have an even higher level of honesty and willingness to cooperate. When you are a co-author, you are instantly a team, and you have to be a team player. You have to both be willing to put in equal effort, and you have to both be willing to compromise on ideas and blend writing styles. We can't over-emphasize the trust factor enough either because you will technically be going into business together. You will be sharing the profits equally with your co-author, and the last thing you want is any hostility when it comes to the percentage of payment each person gets or any hard feelings about one person doing more work than the other. Thankfully, we don't have to worry about this on our end as we have been best friends since the sixth grade and would trust each other with our life. We trust each other so much that we even decided to go further into business together by creating Clean Teen Publishing (an Indie publishing company that focuses on YA and NA novels).

So, how do we do it? How do we work together to produce a novel? Honestly, everyone has a different method for how they would write a book. Some have extensive outlines mapping out every twist and turn of the novel. On the other side of the spectrum are writers like us, who really just go with the flow and wing it most of the way through. We also have multiple Skype dates throughout the writing process to get a grasp on where we want the book to go. We live close enough that we can get together in person, but sometimes it's nice to just sit there in your pajamas with no makeup on and brainstorm without either of us leaving our homes. On our Skype dates, we usually hash out ideas and nix others until we have that OMG moment that inspires us to snap into a writing frenzy.

Our writing ends up being a lot like creative writing where you are given a prompt and told to run with the story. Essentially, when one of us writes a scene and sends it to the other, the other will edit what was just written and then take up where it left off. Then we go back and forth, back and forth until the book is done. At the end, before we send it to the editor, we do one final read-through to make sure that everything made sense and didn't get lost in translation. One tool that has been priceless to us is the review plane in Microsoft Word. By turning this on in the document, we can see what has been added and what either party has deleted. We also love to add comments to our document. We will insert a comment when there is an important piece of information that we need to remember, when there is a quote-worthy sentence, to encourage each other or to simply make fun of each other. We have a lot of fun with our writing relationship. Here are some screen shots of memorable outtakes we've had while writing:

(This was too good not to add to our Night Marchers Special Edition as a blooper!)

(This one is from when Courtney was describing the underground pool of water in the shelter of Project ELE. Thank goodness Willow and Alec didn't go swimming in that cesspool! LOL)

As you can see, we have a blast sharing our creativity with each other and our fans. We hope you've enjoyed this guest post about the world of co-authoring. We'd love for you to check out our books, too. If you have any questions or comments for us, we'd love to hear them!

Thanks for listening to us!
