#RockYourBlog August Writing Prompts: Are You a Dog or Cat Person?

This month, I am participating in the #RockYourBlog Writing Prompts hop. The topic for today, August 8, is: Are you a cat person or a dog person (or some other kind of person … iguana maybe)?

I’m definitely a cat person. I’ve almost always had a cat in my life, from my first feline as a child -- a Siamese named Julius -- to our current black cats, Bella and Jack. Supposedly, I’m allergic to cats. My mom scheduled me for allergy tests as a child, and I tested positive for cats. But it only seems to be the long-haired cats, like Persians, that bother me. As long as I stick with short-haired cats, I’m fine.

When my husband and I first got married, we each had two cats apiece, so we had four cats in the house! That was a little too much, even for me. I’m not that crazy. So, when the last two died off, we decided we were going to wait a few years until we got another cat. So much for good intentions. One of our sons’ girlfriend at the time was home-sitting kittens for a local pet shelter, and she asked us to take in the four little black kittens she was watching while she went away for a long weekend. They turned out to be the sweetest, most friendly cats we’d ever had, and we couldn’t resist adopting two of them, a brother and sister. The day I was signing the adoption papers at the shelter, my husband called me to say that our son, Caleb, had broken his arm at Cub Scout camp, and they were on their way to the hospital. So, when Caleb finally got home and saw his surprise kitties (because we hadn’t told the boys we’d decided to adopt them), we let him name the male cat. (We’re not really sure why he chose Jack, but it seems to fit!) I picked Bella for the girl because I was reading the Twilight series at the time, and because “bella” means “beautiful” in Italian.

As a little side note, besides cats, I also like snakes! When my husband and I were first getting to know each other through email, I told him that I loved snakes, and he told me later that he almost decided not to date me because he thought that was really weird! I don’t plan to own a snake because I think they deserve to live in the wild (the snake on the right was in our yard), but whenever I’m someplace where someone has a snake (like recently at the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine), I love to hold and pet them.

So, what about you? Are you a cat or dog (or snake) person?
